Are we heading down the same road?
Let’s be frank, Clelin Ferrell will not be remembered kindly in Las Vegas Raiders history.
And that’s nothing personal against Ferrell, who always handled himself professionally. But it’s the reality.
The problem was Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock overdrafted the defensive end. Ferrell was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He was considered a reach at the time and the Clemson product never made much of an impact in four seasons with the Raiders before leaving as a free agent to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 after not being given his fifth-year option.
There is a lot of concern in the Raiders’ fan base that we may be witnessing a similar situation developing with second-year defensive end Tyree Wilson.
Wilson was the No. 7 overall draft pick last season and like Ferrell, Wilson hasn’t lived up to expectations yet.
Wilson has had some decent moments here and there and he is coming off a solid performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in which he sacked Patrick Mahomes.
But the truth is Wilson has had far too many quiet performances and he’s shown little consistency. He has eight tackles this season with one sack. He had 29.5 tackles and 3.5 sacks as a rookie.
Ferrell, now a starting defensive end for the Washington Commanders, had 51 tackles and 4.5 sacks through his first 25 NFL games. His finished his Raiders’ career with 105 tackles and 10.5 sacks.
Do you see Wilson having a better career with the Raiders than Ferrell?
