Are you ready for a weekly blast from the Seahawks teams of the past?
This will be a weekly article series throughout the season looking back on what happened for the Seattle Seahawks 40, 30, 20, and 10 years ago this week.
As I mentioned last week, we’ve got 5 games this time with 2 coming in 1984. And hot damn are they fun to revisit! Let’s waste no time getting to them.
A primetime shutout of a division rival on the road? Heck yeah!
This will be a shorter recap but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it! Besides a 42-yard FG from Norm Johnson in the 2nd Quarter, each score came courtesy of the arm of Dave Krieg and hands of Steve Largent. That pair connected for TDs in each of the first three quarters of the game. There was an 11-yarder in the 1st Quarter, a 13-yarder in the 2nd Quarter, and a 16-yarder in the 3rd Quarter to end the scoring on the day and give Seattle the 24-0 shutout over the San Diego Chargers and the season sweep.
Dave Krieg was 23/29 for 282 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT. David Hughes was the leading rusher with 10 carries for 36 yards. Daryl Turner paced Seattle with 92 receiving yards on 6 catches. Steve Largent made the most of his 4 receptions, gaining 51 yards and snatching all 3 TDs.
Kenny Easley matched Largent on the other side of the ball as he had 3 INTs! He picked off Dan Fouts twice and reeled in another from RB Lionel James, who ended his NFL career 0/2 with 0 TD, 1 INT, and 1 sack taken on passing attempts. The Seahawks defense also racked up 7 (!!!!!!!) sacks. Jacob Green had 2.0 sacks while Mike Fanning, Paul Moyer, Joe Nash, and Fredd Young each had 1.0 sack a piece.
Two shutouts of division rivals in back-to-back games? Is this real life??
You bet your bottom dollar it is, and the Kansas City Chiefs were on the beatdown end of the stick! The Seahawks defense was on one in this game as you’ll soon see.
The game started off a little slow, ironically, with Norm Johnson’s 29-yard FG making up the only score of the 1st Quarter as Seattle took the 3-0 lead. Then, the floodgates opened.
Dave Brown had a 90-yard INT return for a TD to put the Seahawks up 10-0. Next, it was Keith Simpson’s turn with a 76-yard INT return for a TD to open up a 17-0 lead. Seattle’s offense got in on the action with 2 Dave Krieg TDs to go up 31-0 before halftime. The first was an 11-yarder to Dan Doornink and the second was a 2-yard pass to Mike Tice.
The Seahawks defense wasn’t done taking it to the Chiefs. Dave Brown had his 2nd INT returned for a TD...
