History would suggest the answer is a strong “yes.”

The 49ers are 4-4 with their bye week approaching and the trade deadline approaching. A win against Dallas has to be viewed as a confidence builder, with the team getting healthier and welcoming back reinforcements. Ricky Pearsall, Malik Mustapha, Dominick Puni, and Isaac Guerendo all have stepped in at points during the season as rookies, with Puni starting from day one, to contribute and provide valuable depth for the 49ers in 2024.
During this bye week, the 49ers front office and higher-ups need to decide whether the team will look to add to the roster during the trade deadline or ride with the players in the building. The Chiefs and Ravens have added to their teams with hopes of it leading to a title, and even the Vikings settled their offensive line issues with Christian Darrisaw’s season-ending injury by trading for Cam Robinson.
Should the 49ers be buyers at the deadline?
The easy answer is yes. Specifically, the 49ers should address defensive line and wide receiver. Jauan Jennings will return after the bye to join Deebo Samuel, but with Brandon Aiyuk out for the season, the 49ers need reliable depth at the position. More than likely, the team will stand pat at the position based on draft capital invested in Pearsall and Jacob Cowing.
The defensive line, specifically EDGE, will be the group the 49ers upgrade, if any. Last season, the team added Randy Gregory and Chase Young. This season, ZaDarius Smith, Jadeveon Clowney, and even old friend D.J. Jones at defensive tackle are possibilities for the 49ers.
If the 49ers are looking to bolster their offensive line depth, the Titans could be a call away, as Daniel Brunskill has fallen out of favor and not starting for Tennessee. Brunskill can play multiple positions and can be counted on in a pinch. Jon Feliciano is nearing a return, but there’s nothing wrong with adding depth to the offensive line.
