The veteran receiver remains a strong candidate for the team’s open WR3 spot.

The New Orleans Saints added veteran WR Cedrick Wilson in free agency this offseason following the departure of former Saints WR Michael Thomas. At 6’2”, Wilson’s frame and skillset could help fill Thomas’ role as the team’s big-body slot receiver, as he is also an above-average blocker at the position.

During Saints HC Dennis Allen’s post-practice press conference on Friday, he emphasized the leadership and experience that Wilson provides for the rather young position group. With roster cuts looming, Allen pointed out the veteran’s willingness to block and put his body on the line, making him an intriguing option for the Saints WR3 job.

We also heard from Wilson after Friday’s practice. Wilson noted that the Saints’ scheme under new OC Klint Kubiak has been easier to grasp compared to the 2023 Miami Dolphins offense. He described the Dolphins’ offense as primarily focused on speed, whereas he has been able to better understand how his blocks create opportunities in the New Orleans offense.

Throughout his five-year NFL career, Wilson has recorded 1,269 yards on 101 receptions and 11 touchdowns. The Saints could use a receiver to step up behind Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed in 2024, and Wilson looks to be perfectly fit for the role.
