Savage previously worked as general manager of the Cleveland Browns.
After the firing of general manager Joe Douglas, Phil Savage will take over as interim general manager for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Savage has worked with the Jets as a senior member of the front office since 2019 when Douglas was hired. He previously served as the general manager for the Cleveland Browns from 2005 to 2008. Additionally, he worked in the past in the front offices of the Eagles and Ravens.
The vast majority of the work of the general manager is finished for the 2024 season. However, somebody needs to continue supervising the scouting departments, sign replacements for injured players, and make additions to the practice squad. Depending on how quickly the Jets hire a new general manager, Savage could also handle some of the early offseason work such as signing players to reserve/future contracts.
Time will tell, but it seems unlikely Savage or any in house candidate will merit serious consideration to replace Douglas.
