Wilson appeared in 10 games this season.
The New England Patriots are set to waive cornerback Marco Wilson, as first reported by EPSN’s Adam Schefter.
Wilson had played 32 percent of the team’s defensive snaps this season, primarily serving as a depth cornerback along the outside.
Playing nine defensive snaps on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, Wilson struggled in coverage allowing two catches for 33 yards against Puka Nacua. Wilson was also in the area as a zone defender on a 25-yard completion to Nacua.
The move likely opens a roster spot for fellow cornerback Alex Austin, who’s 21-day activation window off of injured reserve closes on Wednesday. Austin has resided on injured reserve with an ankle injury since Week 3, but returned to practice nearly three weeks ago — spending the last two as a full participant.
Wilson, 25, was claimed off of waivers last December after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. The former fourth-round pick appeared in just one game for the Patriots last season before suiting up for 10 games this year.
For now, the release leaves Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, Isaiah Bolden, and Marcellas Dial as the five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster.
