Rolling through some fun plays from this past weekend
Every week, there are good and fun plays that happen, but we don’t always get a chance to dive into all of them. We’re focused on themes and the overall gameplan and whatnot, meaning these plays don’t always get their day in the sun. In this space, we’re just gonna fly through a handful of fun plays from this past weekend.
Earlier this week, I looked at a sequence of plays from the opening drive that absolutely would fit into this bucket, but I already wrote about them. So check out that piece, then let’s get rolling here.
On their first drive of the game, the Packers offense went 36 yards in 6 plays, but now faced a 3rd & 4 at the 31. Getting points here is huge, and they certainly don’t want to settle for a long field goal attempt. So they dial up a beauty.
At first, this looks like All Go, a vertical concept that the Packers leaned on heavily in the early days of the LaFleur era. The explosiveness of this concept has sadly gone the way of the buffalo, but the threat of it can work to open up underneath routes, which is exactly what the Packers are doing here.
The Packers are in 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) in a 2x2 set pre-snap. Before the snap, Jayden Reed [11] runs jet motion under the formation. The ball is snapped as Reed passes under Tucker Kraft [85] and they look to be running All Go, with Christian Watson [9] running vertically off the end of the line to wall off the inside, Reed running vertically up the boundary and Kraft running vertically up the seam. The defense reacts, drifting back to throw an umbrella over the vertical routes.
The boundary defender is a part of this, backpedaling to pick up Reed vertically. Instead, Reed breaks on an out route. Love delivers the ball on-time and on-target.
The Packers pick up 7 yards on 3rd & 4 and keep the sticks moving.
Same drive. We looked at a couple of the split-gun runs in the article earlier this week, but this is a different type of run. We’ve got the outside-attacking run working here. Packers in 11 personnel, with Josh Jacobs [8] as the lone running back.
It’s an outside pitch with everyone doing their jobs. Tucker Kraft gets a chip on the edge before working up to seal off the inside. Jayden Reed gets position on the outside shoulder of his defender before adjusting and blocking out. Dontayvion Wicks [13] works upfield to dig out the safety. And Jacobs has a nice run, reading the blocks and ending the run with power.
It’s nothing eye-popping, but it’s an 8 yard gain on 1st & 10 with everyone doing...
