The Green Bay Packers keep racking up the accolades this year! Edgerrin Cooper was the Week 8 NFC Defensive Player of the Week, Xavier McKinney was named Defensive Player of the Month for October, and Jordan Love won FedEx Air & Player of the Week and NVP in the same week. Now special teams is getting in on the action!
The NFL announced that Karl Brooks was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his Week 11 performance in the Packers win over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. With just seconds remaining in the 4th quarter, the Bears lined up to kick a game-winning field goal that would end the team’s 10 game losing streak versus the Packers. But alas, Karl Brooks’ middle finger said “nah”. Brooks blocked the 46-yard field goal attempt by Cairo Santos as time expired, leading the Packers to a 20-19 win.
The Packers last won a special teams player of the week award back in 2022 for Keisean Nixon’s performance against the Minnesota Vikings in the 2022 season when he had a 105-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
According to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com, that blocked field goal was the fourth time since 1995 that an NFL game has ended with a blocked FG attempt under 50 yards and the second this season after the Kansas City Chiefs accomplished the same feat a week prior against the Denver Broncos. Hodkiewicz also pointed out that the Packers have blocked six field goals since the hiring of special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia in 2022, which is second in the league behind the Pittsburgh Steelers (10).
The last time the Packers themselves blocked a game-winning field goal on the final play of a game was *drumroll please* November 26, 1939 when the Packers beat the Cleveland Rams 7-6. What a time to be alive!
