Some surprising decisions were made.

With the start of the NFL regular season is just days away, the New Orleans Saints have officially released their unofficial Week 1 depth chart, per Katherine Terrell.

Offense

QB2: This week, Dennis Allen has consistently said that a decision on the 2nd QB spot will be week to week. On Sunday, Allen will need to choose either Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener for the spot, but for now, both players share the title of QB2.

Nick Saldiveri: The Saints got great news this week with left guard Nick Saldiveri returning to practice. Although the Saints view him as the starter, it may take him another week to get back fully healthy from his injury. Also, Saldiveri has been out for the whole preseason, so easing him back in may take some time.

TE2: It will not be surprising to see the Saints use all four TEs on the roster throughout a game. This slightly reduces the importance of depth chart positioning, but interestingly, Foster Moreau was placed ahead of Juwan Johnson. This could be because Johnson may be still recovering from his injury, but it could also be because Moreau is a much better blocker.

Defense

DT: During the preseason, Bryan Bresee was elevated ahead of Khalen Saunders in the depth chart. It was later revealed that Saunders picked up a calf injury, but now, he is back ahead of Bresee. The other interesting point is even after the Saints traded for defensive tackle John Ridgeway III; rookie Khristian Boyd is still listed ahead.

Strong Safety: Besides QB2, the other Saints’ position battle was at safety, on the opposite side to Tyrann Mathieu. During training camp, the battle was between Jordan Howden, Will Harris, and Johnathan Abram. After Abram was cut, the battle was only between Harris and Howden, but now, it seems Howden has secured the strong safety spot.
