The rest of the league keeps moving even when the Panthers win a game.
The Carolina Panthers won a football game on Sunday, which is obviously not something we’ve been able to say very often the last couple years. Then the Panthers stayed winning by somehow landing a 4th round pick for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo just before Tuesday’s trade deadline. With all this winning happening on Mint Street, it’s easy to lose sight of what else happened in the NFL this week. That’s where we come in.
The Saints unraveled after suffering a defeat to the Panthers, which was their seventh straight after a 2-0 start. Players like Cameron Jordan were on X lamenting the loss as if the Saints are any better than the Panthers right now. Ownership clearly saw enough. They handed head coach Dennis Allen his walking papers on Monday. He ends his Saints tenure with an 18-25 record. It’s the second time in two coaching stints that Allen was let go during his third season. Special Teams coordinator Darren Rizzi will assume interim head coaching duties.
The deconstruction of the Saints didn’t stop with the head coach. They traded former star and still very good cornerback Marshon Lattimore to the Commanders for essentially a 3rd and 4th round pick. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. We know all about it.
It was surprising to see the Panthers net a 4th round pick for second year wide receiver Jonathan Mingo. It becomes even more surprising when you see what kind of returns other wide receivers got on the trade market. The Panthers got more back for Mingo than the Titans did for DeAndre Hopkins (5th that becomes a 4th if Hopkins plays and the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl). Mike Williams was traded from the Jets to the Steelers for a 5th round pick. Good job Dan Morgan.
Antonio Pierce hired Luke Getsy to be his offensive coordinator thinking he might be better than he was as offensive coordinator of the Bears. He wasn’t, so Getsy was fired just nine games into his stint with the Raiders. Taking over as interim offensive coordinator is our old pal Scott Turner. To help add some more ideas to the room, the Raiders are also hiring Scott’s dad, Norv Turner, to be a senior advisor for the offense.
Turner adds to a throwback cast of coaches and advisors that includes the likes of Joe Philbin and Rob Ryan.
