NFC West Recap: Thanks, Chicago

NFC West Recap: Thanks, Chicago
Niners Nation Niners Nation

It’s not going to get easier in the season’s second half.

Thanks a lot, Chicago Bears. Thanks a lot for nothing. With the San Francisco 49ers on their bye week. There were two games you were watching. One had the Arizona Cardinals against the Chicago Bears, with the team to root for obvious. The other was the Los Angeles Rams traveling to the Seattle Seahawks with a winner that...well...whoever you want.

And somehow, both games were more stressful than they needed to be. I think the best way to describe this is the Cardinals win again, and the 49ers need to win again.

Arizona Cardinals (5-4)

Well, then, the Arizona Cardinals have a winning record. In the first half of their game against the Chicago Bears, it seemed like maybe, just maybe, it might be close, but once it got to 21-9, you knew the Bears weren’t coming back. The game ended 29-9, Cardinals.

Oh, you mean the Cardinals kept the Bears from scoring ANY points in the second half? So while a huge ask, it is possible to have a team hold off the other? 13 points is doable?

So that IS possible? Wow, color me shocked.

Back to the Cardinals: They are now 5-4 and in sole possession of the NFC West. The Seattle Seahawks' loss to the Los Angeles Rams (we’ll get to that) removed tiebreakers, and the Cardinals are now in first place.

Wonderful.

Seattle Seahawks (4-5)/Los Angeles Rams (4-4)

What an ugly, ugly, ugly game. It was fun, but it was ugly—at least for the first half. For one half of football, we saw absolutely nothing until the last five minutes, when nine points were scored between both teams.

The second half is where things got interesting. First, it was 13-3, Seahawks, then the Rams woke up. The Rams managed to get out in front of the Seahawks, scoring 17 unanswered points. The Seahawks did Seahawk things, shooting themselves in the foot and doing their best 49ers impression, coughing up a lead.

Then, with one minute left, the Seahawks got some plays out and tied the game up 20-20—and I’m sure none of us saw that one coming.

The Seahawks got the ball and went for it on 4th down. Not like a field goal would have mattered, because after taking over on downs, the Rams only needed four plays to score a touchdown and end the game.

It’s only fitting I bring up this point—the 49ers could have changed the trajectory of the Rams’ season by beating them way back in Week 3. But no. Things could have been a heck of a lot different right now from that game. If only Ronnie Bell had caught that ball.

The Rams win puts them back to .500 when they were running on fumes a few weeks ago. The Seahawks return to a losing streak and go into their bye to regroup.

This puts the Rams in second place, with the 49ers in...
