New stunning details have emerged behind Stefon Diggs’ divorce with the Buffalo Bills back in April as the All-Pro wideout prepares to face his former team on Sunday.
Stefon Diggs emerged as one of football’s premier wide receivers after coming over to Buffalo via trade with the Minnesota Vikings in 2020. He eclipsed the 100-catch and 1,100-yard marks in each of his four seasons with Josh Allen’s Bills, leading the team to four AFC East division crowns and a 2020 AFC Championship Game appearance.
Following rumors that the Bills had grown tired of Diggs’ attitude and that he wanted a change of scenery, GM Brandon Beane sent him to the Houston Texans in a blockbuster trade. Diggs and the Texans host the Bills this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke to several sources to learn more about the breakup between Diggs and the Bills. For starters, one Buffalo team source told Fowler that it stemmed from the team deciding that the offense could function just fine without him.
“Tremendous player,” the source told Fowler. “But the offense didn’t need him anymore.”
Another source cited the Bills’ Week 15 blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys. Buffalo won that game 31-10 over a top NFC team, even though Diggs was hardly a factor with four receptions for 48 yards:
“For a while it was, ‘No way we can play without this dude. But I thought to myself, *‘*Oh, maybe we can do this without him.'”
When it came to shopping Stefon Diggs? Fowler’s report stated that it wasn’t necessarily a trade request on his end and that both sides agreed that a split was the best course of action:
“While team sources were not able to confirm whether Diggs officially requested a trade, they agree that Diggs was open to a change in scenery and that an eventual trade was a mutual decision.”
Diggs’ Texans are sitting nicely at 3-1 atop the AFC South. The Bills (also 3-1) are riding a high-flying offense (26.5 points per game through Week 4) and are in sole possession of first place in the AFC East. So yes, the trade has worked out nicely for both parties thus far.
After acquiring Diggs via trade, the Texans agreed to restructure his contract so that the All-Pro wideout would be eligible for free agency in 2025. Of course, the Texans will be keen to extend Diggs if he continues to produce at a high level with CJ Stroud.
