Comcast-Spectacor is going to beef up Xfinity Live as part of the sports complex redevelopment plan. New renderings appear in a PDF sent to the Philadelphia Art Commission, describing a “two-story, open-air addition.. along with renovation of the outdoor entertainment plaza space, including a stage, stage lawn, and beer garden.” Some photos:
It looks like the plan also includes an outdoor addition to the PBR bar with a small stage and assorted seating. I’m old enough to remember when Badfish played a free show at Xfinity Live and remember thinking to myself, “you know, piss-soaked, trash-filled parking lots are cool, but this is also nice.” Of course, there are people out there who are skeptical that any of this ever gets built. They think it’s a PR stunt to combat the Sixers arena plan, which is being heard in City Council as we speak. But as the little girl in the taco commercial once said, “por que no los dos?” Why not both? Why not the Sixers on Market Street, then Comcast-Spectacor, the Phillies, and Eagles joining together to revitalize the sports complex? By the way, not sure you remember, but Xfinity Live was supposed to be much bigger when it was originally built. The first renderings showed this huge thing going right up to the Wells Fargo Center. What was built was actually much smaller, so what you’re seeing in these most recent renderings is much more similar to the original plan about 15 years ago.
