The Giants and Steelers were once divisional rivals, but this will be just the 12th game between the two teams since the AFL-NFL merger.
This evening, Monday Night Football features two long-standing NFL franchises in opposite conferences matching up with one another. Once, long ago, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers were divisional rivals in the NFL’s East division, and the two teams played each other twice each year.
Then, in 1970, everything changed with the AFL-NFL merger. The Steelers (along with the Cleveland Browns) were picked to move over to the AFC, joining the incoming AFL teams in a new conference. In the 50-plus years since, these two teams have played each other only 11 times, even going nine years between games at one point.
Tonight, they will rekindle a long-dormant rivalry in prime time, with one of the teams clinging to the slimmest of playoff hopes while the other aims to hold on to sole possession of a lead in their division. Tune in and join us for tonight’s game to put a bow on week 8.
