The 7-4 Baltimore Ravens come into this game off a tough 18 - 16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. They have dropped two of their last four games after winning their prior five straight. The Ravens have turned common perceptions about them on their head this year. Ordinarily we think of the Ravens as having one of the best defenses in the NFL and just enough offense to win games. This year the Ravens defense has struggled. While the Ravens defense has dominated against the run, ranking 2nd in the NFL in rushing yards allowed, they have been abysmal against the pass, ranking dead last in the NFL in passing yards allowed. In contrast, the Ravens have been nearly unstoppable on offense. They rank 1st in the NFL in yards gained, 2nd in points scored, 2nd in rushing yards gained and 3rd in passing yards gained. Pick your poison on defense against the Ravens, they’re tough to stop no matter what you do.
The 7-3 Los Angeles Chargers come into this game winners of five of their last six games. The Chargers have been spectacular on defense. Only one team, the Cincinnati Bengals last week, has scored more than 20 points against the Chargers all season, and the Chargers rank 1st in the NFL in points allowed. The Chargers have won every game this season in which they have scored more than 15 points. A big part of the Chargers’ success this season has been their ability to limit turnovers. The Chargers offense has only turned the ball over five times all season, good for 1st in the NFL.
The Chargers have been a great home team, losing at home just once all season to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens have been a mediocre road team with a 3-3 road record. The Chargers have home field advantage tonight. The long trip to the west coast isn’t always easy on east coast teams. I’m taking the Chargers to upset the Ravens at home.
