The Philadelphia Eagles are two seasons removed from making it to the Super Bowl.
They were one of the hottest teams in the league that season but fell just short of their goals for the year.
Some called it a Super Bowl hangover, but the Eagles couldn’t replicate their success last season, losing in the first round of the playoffs.
They wanted to do everything possible to avoid another disappointing campaign, so they made some key free-agent acquisitions in the offseason.
Perhaps their most notable was the addition of Saquon Barkley, who has helped open up passing lanes for Jalen Hurts.
Barkley has been one of the best running backs in the league for the past five years, and many thought this move was a luxury, not a necessity for the Eagles.
As Mina Kimes recently pointed out on the NFL on ESPN, Barkley’s presence does help this team become “more unpredictable.”

Whether it’s running a read option, getting him the ball in the flat, or simply running the ball downhill, there aren’t many downsides to having Barkley on the roster.
His contract might have been expensive for today’s standards of running backs, but the results speak for themselves.
The Eagles’ passing offense might not be what they once were under Hurts, but Barkley gives them every opportunity to be one of the top units in the league.
It will be interesting to see where they end up at the end of the season, especially given the current strength of the NFC.
