A key to the run defense, Pennel knows the Bills offer a unique challenge in that department.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel emphasized the significance of their upcoming matchup with the Buffalo Bills, acknowledging the challenges posed by the Bills’ run game and quarterback Josh Allen’s mobility. Speaking to reporters, Pennel described the Bills as a formidable opponent they’ve battled over the years.
“We know how important this game is. We know what rides on it, and we’re prepared,” said Pennel, highlighting the stakes as the Chiefs look to solidify their position in the standings.
The Bills’ run game, led by James Cook and bolstered by Allen’s dual-threat ability, has been one of the most effective in the league this season. Pennel noted that Allen’s legs add another layer of difficulty for opposing defenses.
“It’s the simplicity and execution of that run game,” he explained. “They’ve got stretches, opens, some gap-seam stuff. They’ve got a quarterback that can run downhill, [and] that’s a bigger guy, so that’s what we see. That’s what we’re up against.”
Pennel also emphasized the importance of disciplined defense to counter Buffalo’s attack.
“We’ve got to get in the lanes,” he added. “We’ve got to fill those lanes up. We’ve got to have a relentless pass rush in those times and those moments, and everybody just has to stay in their gap,” he said.
For Pennel and the Chiefs, this game is not just another midseason matchup but a test against a potential playoff rival.
“Ever since Josh Allen’s been in Buffalo, it’s kind of been that scenario. So, we know how important this game is,” Pennel reiterated.
As the Chiefs prepare to face a hostile Buffalo crowd, Pennel welcomed the challenge.
“I look forward to games like this,” he finished.
