The Jets return from their bye to take on the Seattle Seahawks

The New York Jets were mercifully on their bye week this week, thus sparing their fans another crushing defeat. Last week the Jets lost to the Indianapolis Colts when they couldn’t stop one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL, Anthony Richardson, from putting together a game-winning touchdown drive in the last two minutes of the game. It was the Jets’ seventh loss in their last eight games, and it ended whatever playoff delusions the Jets may once have had.

The loss moved the Jets into a tie with the New England Patriots for last place in the AFC East. The Patriots broke that tie by losing to the Miami Dolphins today, lifting the Jets into third place in the division for the time being. Now the 3-8 Jets prepare to take on the 6-5 Seattle Seahawks at home in East Rutherford, New Jersey next Sunday.

The Seahawks are coming off two consecutive wins against the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers. Those two teams inflicted two of the most embarrassing losses the Jets have suffered this entire embarrassment of a season. Old friend Geno Smith is under center for the Seahawks as they vie for the NFC West title and a playoff berth.

Let’s take a look at the current odds for this game according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The current line has the Jets a home underdog by 1.5 points. That seems overly generous to a Jets team that historically is awful coming out of their bye week. The Jets have been one of the worst teams in the NFL this year. This is a team that has put together four good halves of football all season. Now they have nothing to play for as the entire organization seems to be gearing up for the inevitable rebuild starting next year. In contrast, the Seahawks are playing for a division crown and a playoff berth. The long trip east can be troublesome for west coast teams, but there is little else that favors the Jets in this game. As they have most of the year, it appears the Jets are getting too much credit from the oddsmakers here. The game has an over/under of 42.5 points. On the moneyline the Jets are +108, while the Seahawks are -126.
