This feels like some next level trolling by the oddsmakers
The New York Jets took their sixth defeat of the 2024 season on Sunday afternoon with an ugly 25 - 22 loss to the lowly New England Patriots. Prior to the game the Patriots had the worst record in the NFL and the longest losing streak in the NFL. Now the Jets have joined the Patriots in the cellar of the AFC East, a far cry from preseason expectations of contending for a title. The Jets led the game deep into the fourth quarter, but the Jets defense was unable to hold a supremely untalented Patriots offense out of the end zone in the last minute game winning drive. In the latest installment of the Jets long-running poor impersonation of a good football team, the Jets hit rock bottom. Of course each week you think this terrible football team can’t sink any lower, only to have them impress you with their sinking abilities. The Jets stink. Aaron Rodgers stinks. The Jets defense stinks. The Jets coaches stink. But most importantly, the Jets owner stinks to high heavens. Until the owner sells the team there is no reason to hope for better outcomes. This is who the Jets are. Get used to it.
The pathetic performance by the Jets dropped them four games under .500 and four games behind the first place Buffalo Bills in the AFC East division. All hope for a playoff berth is lost. This team is far more likely to end up with the worst record in the NFL than with a playoff berth. The rest of the season is extended garbage time and auditioning for jobs next year.
Now the 2-6 Jets head home to take on the 6-2 Houston Texans on short rest. The game will be on Thursday Night Football. A win will only prolong delusional notions the Jets might compete for a playoff spot. A loss might have the beneficial side effect of the Jets realizing the season is lost and starting a fire sale for draft assets at the trade deadline. One can dream.
The Texans have a two game lead atop the AFC South division. Led by second year sensation C.J. Stroud at quarterback, the Texans have won four of their last five games. They rank 2nd in the NFL in yards allowed and 11th in yards gained. The Texans have done a good job at generating turnovers on defense and avoiding turnovers on offense. The Jets really have no reason to expect a victory over a Texans team that is better in nearly every aspect of the game. Who knows, perhaps that will be the Jets’ lucky charm.
Let’s take a look at the current odds for this game according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The current line has the Jets a home favorite by 1.5 points. This may be the most bizarre spread I have ever witnessed. Other than home field, which has yielded just one Jets win this season, there...
