Phil Savage spent 4 years running the Browns
If the Cleveland Browns decide to move on from GM Andrew Berry and/or HC Kevin Stefanski they will find that the list of shoppers on the marketplace is growing. The New York Jets and New Orleans Saints got a jump on the action by letting go of their head coaches earlier in the season.
There have been rumors that the Jacksonville Jaguars will do the same but fully clean house of both the coach and general manager.
Stefanski and Berry highlighted winning being important the rest of the year despite being out of the playoff hunt. A huge loss to the Saints in Week 11 didn’t help as a tough schedule and Hard Knocks loom.
The Jets were not done with making big decisions as Tuesday they let go of GM Joe Douglas. The timing is interesting as Douglas was in the final year of his contract with New York, like Cleveland, basically out of the playoff hunt.
The Jets named former Browns GM Phil Savage as their interim front office boss:
Savage was Cleveland’s GM from 2005 to 2008. The team accumulated a 24-40 record with Savage at the helm with the selection of Hall of Famer Joe Thomas at the top of his best moves.
Beyond Thomas, Savage’s decisions in the NFL draft were head-scratching including trading down one spot with the Baltimore Ravens to allow them to select Haloti Ngata, trading up for Brady Quinn and trading away draft picks for veterans, leaving the team with a fourth-rounder as their first selection in 2008.
Off the field, Savage sent an email response that included an expletive to a Browns fan after a game.
After being fired in Cleveland, Savage worked with the Philadelphia Eagles before taking over the Senior Bowl. Savage joined the Jets in 2019 and was a Senior Football Advisor before being named interim GM today.
