Jerry Jones says Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy could get contract extension

Jerry Jones noted an extension for Mike McCarthy should not be ruled out.

Jerry Jones spoke on Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan. This is one of true factual statements you will read in the next two seconds.

The second truth is that Jerry Jones said something outlandish that has people worked up that is probably just him stirring the pot.

What is going on, you ask? Jones noted that head coach Mike McCarthy could possibly receive a contract extension. Cue the chaos.

Let’s establish a few things before we move any further:

  • Mike McCarthy is arguably the most successful coach who the Cowboys have had throughout the entirety of The Drought™️
  • The front office set McCarthy (and residually everyone) up incredibly poorly with an offseason of inactivity and pot-stirring
  • That being said, McCarthy has not exactly proven to be someone who could win an episode of Chopped as he has not done much with the provided ingredients
  • It feels very safe to say that an overall reset, including from a general manager perspective but that is what it is, is needed for this team
  • As noted, this is all just likely Jerry Jones talking

How can we say so confidently that this is likely just Jerry Jones stirring the pot once more? Oh, I don’t know, besides the almost 30 years of history let us also consider something else.

Back in January when the Cowboys were coming off of a historical playoff loss that served as the Trojan Horse to completely destroy the franchise as we know it, the team chose not to extend Mike McCarthy. To be clear, McCarthy deserving an extension after the horrendous playoff loss was debatable, but he was coming off of three straight 12-win seasons and to Jerry’s point on Tuesday, he is a Super Bowl-winning head coach. The latter point there is a bit silly to brag about, but it was true in January the same way it is today.

An extension for McCarthy in January would have surely been met with pushback, but at the very least it would have neutered any lame-duck status that would go on to actually surround McCarthy and his staff throughout the entirety of everything we have been living in since then. The TL;DR here is that if Jerry himself did not believe that McCarthy was worthy of an extension at any point over the last three years, the idea that he could suddenly believe that it makes sense is extremely difficult to believe.

This is a big week for the Cowboys with their Thanksgiving Day game happening. Factor in that they are coming off of a win for the first time since the San Diego Padres were still alive in the MLB playoffs and the vibes and energy are at a place where everyone is feeling good.

Do not take the bait.
