The Denver Broncos didn’t really splash about at the trade deadline. Let’s discuss what that says about the team.
The Denver Broncos traded a depth edge player in Baron Browning to the Arizona Cardinals and signed one of their starting edge players to an extension. Other than that, the NFL trade deadline came and went without much ado in Broncos Country.
This says in my opinion that Sean Payton believes this team is on the right path, but they aren’t close enough to really try splashing about in order to try and squeeze out a couple more wins this season.
That should come as no surprise to anyone following the team. They are young, growing, and still quite short on talent in spots on their roster (running back, wide receiver, tight end, safety, and inside linebacker in no particular order).
But adding any one of those to the roster today isn’t going to really move the needle insofar as what the team is going to do in 2024.
Conversely, the talent the Broncos do have is key to their ability to fight for a wild-card spot which would signal a major accomplishment for Sean Payton’s team. They can’t afford to trade away even a guy like Courtland Sutton who may not even be a long-term part of the plans for the team.
Next season though, the Broncos may have both the flexibility and the desire to play more at the trade deadline. The team will be out from under the terrible Russell Wilson contract with a much-improved roster after an offseason of work and may be in need of a player or have a dearth of talent that they could gain draft capital with.

Jonathon Cooper is the third Broncos draft pick signed to a long-term second contract, which is a feather in George Paton's cap.
