Horse Tracks: Bo Nix ranks highly in explosive plays for quarterbacks

According to Dane Brugler of The Athletic, rookie quarterback Bo Nix is second only behind Lamar Jackson in plays that went for more than 20 yards.

Good morning, Broncos Country.

It’s tough to find positive things to write about after the loss to the Baltimore Ravens. But in order to keep some good vibes going, I thought I’d give a shoutout to rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

Even though the offense hasn’t been as consistent as we had hoped, one recent tidbit from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler stood out for me. According to Brugler’s analysis, between passes and runs, Nix has 33 plays for 20 or more yards this season. Twenty-eight of those have come through the air with the other five on rush attempts.

The only quarterback ahead of him? Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens—the reigning NFL MVP—and the guy who pulled off some high-quality magic against the Broncos’ top-ranked defense last Sunday.

I wouldn’t have guessed that at all. It was quite the surprise. Though noticing a prominent analyst point that out was a huge plus to help put Nix’s rookie season endeavors in a positive light.

While Nix struggled early on in the season with passes down the field but has experienced significant growth in that respect over the past several weeks. On top of that, his ability to make plays on the ground (295 rushing yards thus far) when things break down has also been an asset for the offense. And for a rookie quarterback, Nix has done pretty good at limiting his mistakes and keeping the ball out of harm’s way.

While Nix clearly isn’t the sum of all his parts, we’ve all been witness to his gamer mentality and big play ability. With only 9 professional games under his belt, I’d say that Nix has fared pretty well to date and perhaps better than any rookie quarterback not named Jayden Daniels. Only time will tell if Nix ends up being the franchise’s true quarterback of the future, but at first glance things look pretty good.

As always—thank you for reading. Here is today’s slate of articles for Horse Tracks.
