Could Slayton fill in for Stefon Diggs with the Houston Texans?

A recent report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo says the New York Giantswould have to be blown away” to trade pending free agent wide receiver Darius Slayton before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

Would the Houston Texans be willing to do just that, make an offer for Slayton that GM Joe Schoen simply can’t refuse?

The AFC South-leading Texans, 6-2, have designs on a deep playoff run in C.J. Stroud’s second season as the team’s quarterback. They made a major offseason trade to boost their offense, acquiring star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills.

Now that Diggs has been lost for the season with a torn ACL, CBS Sports believes that Slayton is one of the available wide receivers who could help the Texans overcome the loss of Diggs.

CBS also mentions the Pittsburgh Steelers, against whom Slayton had 108 receiving yards Monday night, as a potential landing spot for Slayton should the Giants move him.

The Giants face a difficult decision with Slayton, a 27-year-old in his sixth NFL season. Slayton had led the Giants in receiving yards in four of his five NFL seasons. This season, he is second on the Giants in receiving yards with 420. That, though, puts him on pace for a career-best 893 receiving yards.

Slayton, though, can be a free agent at season’s end. Do the Giants want to keep him beyond this season? If they do, and they should want to, can they? Slayton has taken a paycut and signed a contract he thought was below his value since Joe Schoen became Giants’ GM. Will he even want to stay, or would he prefer to look for more money elsewhere?
