After already parting ways with their head coach, the Jets also let go of their general manager.
Not every 3-8 season is the same. For the New England Patriots, it is believed to be the first step in their rebuild after the end of the Bill Belichick era. For the New York Jets, meanwhile, it is a major disappointment after the club had been a popular playoff and even Super Bowl pick in the offseason.
However, 11 weeks in it is clear New York is itself headed for a major rebuild. After head coach Robert Saleh was already fired earlier in the season, general manager Joe Douglas has now been let go as well: the Jets announced his firing on Tuesday.
“Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement.
“I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will be the interim general manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the process to identify a new general manager immediately.”
Douglas was in the final season of the six-year deal he originally signed with the club in 2019. Under his leadership, the Jets went just 30-64 with no winning seasons or playoff berths. While he did draft some promising players such as Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall and Sauce Gardner, the team’s overall lack of success has now cost him his job.
The Jets split their series with the Patriots 1-1 this season. Unless they manufacture a turnaround for the ages, they will miss the postseason for an NFL-worst 14th straight year.
