Lions would be Super Bowl favorites if they could acquire Myles Garrett from the Browns at the NFL trade deadline
There is almost zero chance that the Cleveland Browns are accepting phone calls about trading DE Myles Garrett much less thinking about dealing him. Garrett’s talent (reigning Defensive Player of the Year), age (28) and contract (fifth highest-paid edge rusher) give the Browns zero reason to move him despite rumors that they have gotten phone calls.
Even looking at the largest defender trade made recently, Cleveland isn’t even listening before hanging up.
That doesn’t mean that Garrett is completely untradeable, although he’s on our list from the Browns roster. Instead, any deal would be in the absurd range for it actually to happen. Friday on ESPN, former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum presented an absurd Garrett to the Detroit Lions deal:
The trade, in case that is hard to read:
The “Who Says No?” question is almost certainly both teams. Cleveland’s roster and cap space, which would be even more negatively impacted by this trade, are not setup for a full rebuild. Gibbs is dynamic and cheap but there is no certainty that Detroit will ever be picking high enough for the Browns to quickly replace Garrett.
For the Lions, while Garrett is an amazing talent, that is a lot of draft capital and a young star. Detroit will also get their version of Garrett, the injured Aidan Hutchinson, back next year. While two is better than one, gutting your future to add to a strength is not always the best move.
There is also the reality that Detroit would be giving up more for Garrett than even the recent huge quarterback trades. By himself, Gibbs would likely get a first-round pick and another on Day 2 of the upcoming NFL draft. The value of four 1st-round picks and two 2nd-rounders is absurd.
Then again, it would take an absurd offer for the Browns to deal away Garrett.
Who says no? As a Browns fan, what do you think of this deal given the age of the roster, salary cap and quarterback situation?
