The veteran linebacker cited a few little things that would have made a big difference in the result against the Bills.
As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare to rebound from their first loss, linebacker Drue Tranquill emphasized the importance of defensive execution — especially on third downs — when facing a steadily improving Carolina Panthers team this Sunday.
Reflecting on last week’s performance against the Bills, Tranquill identified missed opportunities that could have turned the tide in their favor.
“You look at that first drive, there’s two third downs where we played good first, second down defense,” said Tranquill, focusing on situational awarenss. “Had a chance to get off the field, and they were able to keep the drive alive.”
Tranquill also credited the Bills’ execution in crucial moments, citing a play where linebacker Nick Bolton pressured Josh Allen, but the quarterback managed to deliver an accurate pass under duress.
“Josh Allen made that throw to Amari Cooper with Nick right in his face hitting him,” noted Tranquill. “He almost has to short-arm it and puts it on a dime down the sideline. They executed at a high level and made plays down the stretch that we didn’t make.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s matchup, Tranquill stressed that the Panthers’ young roster and recent improvements could pose a challenge. He acknowledged the potential impact of Carolina’s rookie running back Jonathon Brooks, who is expected to make his debut.
“We watched a little bit of his college tape,” he said. “He seems explosive, able to make good cuts, good in the screen game. We’ll have our hands full.”
Tranquill also discussed the need for adjustments based on quarterback play, mentioning the differences between facing Josh Allen and Carolina’s Bryce Young.
“A guy like Bryce can duck, get underneath you,” described Tranquill, “so it’s just a different approach when you’re dealing with each of those quarterbacks.”
Despite the loss, Tranquill is optimistic about the team’s ability to rebound, pointing to their high standards and consistency.
“We just know we have a high ability to execute,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’re just a bunch of competitors trying to win.”
As the Chiefs head into Week 11, the focus is clear: execute better, especially on third downs — and be prepared for a Panthers team that’s starting to find its rhythm.
