The Denver Broncos made an active roster move on Sunday, just one day before the team kicks off against the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC West showdown. How might this move impact the Broncos roster or personnel on Sunday?
The Denver Broncos made an active roster move on Saturday, officially activating center Luke Wattenberg off of injured reserve, as first reported by Mike Klis of 9News. Wattenberg now moves onto the Broncos’ 53-man roster without having to make a procedural move because they had one spot available following the team’s trade of outside linebacker Baron Browning right before the NFL Trade Deadline.
Earlier this week, he returned to practice for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury during the Broncos Week 5 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. His return to practice opened up his 21-day window.
Wattenberg moves back onto the 53-man roster, but the bigger question for Sunday is whether or not he’ll slide back into the starting lineup on Sunday when the Broncos face the Kansas City Chiefs and their top-five defense. Center Alex Forsyth, QB Bo Nix’s teammate at Oregon, ended up filling in at center as the starter in Wattenberg’s absence, and he’s played terrifically in his place.
Personally, the Broncos should keep Forsyth as the starter because of his level of play. Denver’s offense has been growing on a weekly basis, and the idea of messing with the chemistry they’ve been building on the offensive line doesn’t make as much sense right now.
When Wattenberg was out, Denver elevated veteran Calvin Throckmorton to the 53-man roster where he served as Forsyth’s backup. With Nix growing and gaining more comfortability with Forsyth and the offensive line, changing it up against the Chiefs doesn’t seem like the best decision, but we’ll see what head coach Sean Payton decides.
