Commanders rule out Austin Seibert vs. Steelers, sign Zane Gonzalez

Gonzalez was signed to the practice squad Friday and elevated for Sunday’s game after Seibert was ruled out with a hip injury.

The Washington Commanders won’t have their kicker and leading scorer, Austin Seibert, on Sunday when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers. Seibert, who was initially listed as questionable to play because of a hip injury, was downgraded to out Saturday.

The team signed Zane Gonzalez to the practice squad after practice Friday and elevated him to the active roster Saturday. He will step in with only limited practice reps with holder/punter Tress Way — primarily from his workout on Friday. (The Commanders’ practices on Saturdays before games are walk-throughs).

The Commanders also could be without long snapper Tyler Ott, who was added to the injury report Saturday because of an illness. He is questionable to play Sunday. Should he be unable to go, guard Nick Allegretti is the emergency long snapper.

Commanders K Seibert out, LS Ott questionable vs. Steelers

Gonzalez has not attempted a kick in an NFL game since 2021 — he suffered a quad injury the next summer and was out for the season. Three years ago for Carolina he made 20 of 22 field goals; he made all but one of his 23 extra point attempts.

Gonzalez becomes the fifth kicker signed by Washington since it allowed Joey Slye to exit in free agency. Seibert had settled the position until his injury.

Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr., CB Marshon Lattimore ruled out vs. Steelers

The Washington Commanders will be without top running back Brian Robinson Jr. and newly added cornerback Marshon Lattimore when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the team announced Friday.

Robinson (hamstring) did not participate in Friday’s practice after being listed as a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday, while Lattimore (hamstring) did not practice this week.

Robinson leads Washington in rushing this season with 101 carries for 461 yards and six touchdowns in seven games played, but has missed two of the Commanders’ past four games, including a Week 6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a knee injury, and last weekend’s win over the New York Giants.

The Commanders acquired Lattimore, a first-round pick by New Orleans in 2017 and four-time Pro Bowler, from the New Orleans Saints ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Lattimore played in seven of the Saints’ first eight games this season, collecting 30 total tackles and two passes defended, before missing last Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.
