The Denver Broncos have the ability to prove a lot of doubters wrong by defeating Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
There weren’t many football analysts who expected the Denver Broncos to have a great season. In fact, a lot of them thought they would be downright awful.
Various outlets wrote about how they had one of the worst rosters in the National Football League. The oddsmakers set the over/under win total for the Broncos at 5.5 games prior to the season. Everywhere you looked, it seemed like most folks were overlooking or underestimating the Broncos.
Nearing the halfway point, the Broncos are sitting at 5-3 with a shot at earning their sixth victory of the season. This weekend’s matchup against the Baltimore Ravens will be the toughest of the season. It’s a chance for them to make a statement. An opportunity to prove the haters wrong and cement themselves as formidable contender in the AFC.
Longtime veteran and the elder statesman of the wide receiver corps Courtland Sutton is looking forward to the challenge. And at the same time, he is embracing the underdog mentality that comes along with all the outside fodder and doubt.
“We’re a team that can contend in this division. I think that a lot of people write us off based upon the personnel that we have on our team, and that’s completely fine. We love that. We love going into these games being underdogs,” stated Sutton.
The Broncos are the biggest underdogs of any team scheduled to play this weekend according to the bookies. That’s a surprise to me, considering that the Ravens didn’t look so great losing to a relatively poor Cleveland Browns squad last weekend. Any given Sunday anything can happen. So, what’s stopping the Broncos from shocking the gridiron world and toppling the Ravens on the road in Baltimore?
Perhaps their biggest enemy this weekend is themselves. The Broncos have looked sharp winning five of their last six games. But they’ve had some self-inflicted wounds—primarily turnovers on offense—that have caused them some issues. Sutton knows in order to beat the Ravens, they have to play mistake free football and put together their most complete game yet.
“We know that if we go out there and perform the way we know how to perform, execute and minimize the negative plays and the things that can hurt us, we feel like we can compete with anybody,” added Sutton.
How Sunday’s affair turns out remains to be seen. Even so, I do know one thing. The Broncos are playing confident and inspired football. They’re hungry and determined. It’s been a while since we’ve seen this kind of swagger and heart in the Mile High City. A win this weekend would mean everything for the Broncos and give them the momentum to finish strong in the second half of the season.
Playoffs? Quite likely if they can take care of business on the road in Baltimore.
