Two NFL media experts have the Rams trading completely out of the first round

The Los Angeles Rams are set to make a pick in the first round of the NFL Draft for the first time since 2016. If you’re counting that’s 2,919 days since the have made a pick in the first round. The big question now as draft day is finally here and general manager Les Snead is on the clock is what they will do with it.

While the Rams haven’t made a pick in the first round since 2016, that’s not to say that they haven’t had one going into draft night before. Back in 2019, Los Angeles held the 31st overall pick and ended up trading back several times to 62 and selected Taylor Rapp. With the draft getting closer, there seems to be some steam that the Rams could do exactly that once again from the 19th overall pick.

In the final mock drafts NFL Media’s Peter Schrager and Daniel Jeremiah both have the Rams trading back and out of the first round entirely. Schrager has the Rams making a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to move back to 32 and then another trade with the New England Patriots at the top of the second round. Said Schrager,

“The Rams are a team I’d circle as a potential trade-back team on Thursday night, and, if I’m being honest, a multiple-time trade-back team. The Rams, perhaps too busy enjoying their Draft House in Hermosa Beach, trade back again and out of the first round entirely. The Patriots package their second- and third-round picks (Nos. 34 and 68) to move back into Round 1.”

With those picks, the Chiefs selected offensive tackle Amarius Mims while the Patriots took wide receiver Xavier Legette. What makes Schrager’s mock interesting is that he does a lot of reporting to come up with his picks. This could mean the Rams are considering a serious trade down. Jeremiah had a similar scenario with the Rams trading all the way out of the first round with the Washington Commanders. Said Jeremiah,

“Poised to make a first-round pick for the first time since 2016, Rams GM Les Snead has a chuckle and trades out once again. This deal could net him the 36th and 40th picks in the draft if he gives up a third-rounder in the swap.”

This close to the draft, it’s certainly possible that this is all just a ruse and a smokescreen as there had been some speculation that the Rams could be a team that could move up. At the same time, trading back and acquiring more picks could certainly be on the table as Snead looks to fill out the roster.

With that being said, if the Rams were to completely trade out of the first round, it would leave a relative feeling of disappointment. There are some that have a “more picks is better” mindset. While having more darts to throw at the...
