Tony Buzbee is representing victims in Sean Combs’ case
The Cleveland Browns 2024 NFL season has been a disaster and, in general, is over. Everything now is about moving forward, creating stability for 2025 and beyond, the upcoming NFL draft and developing young players.
Unfortunately, given his play on the field, the Browns have already made it clear, twice, that QB Deshaun Watson will remain the team’s starting quarterback.
Watson’s off-the-field issues remain a piece of the discussion around the quarterback as does his contract. The latest allegation and lawsuit brought up questions about whether the Browns would be able to void his guarantees.
Monday night, that lawsuit was closed with a confidential settlement according to the alleged victim’s attorney:
“We have now resolved our client’s claim with Deshaun Watson,” attorney Tony Buzbee said in a statement to PFT. “The settlement is confidential.”
In the piece linked above, it is assumed that the settlement means that the victim will not be speaking to the NFL which will make their new investigation into Watson difficult to proceed. That does not mean the league, which initially sought an indefinite suspension, will not continue the investigation but that Watson likely will not be suspended and Cleveland will not be able to get out of the contract they agreed to after trading for him.
The timing is interesting with Buzbee (pictured above on the left) now representing victims in the Sean Combs case, better known as “Puff Daddy” or “Diddy,” Combs has been charged with racketeering and sex trafficking in a federal court. Former Green Bay Packers executive Andrew Brandt believes the timing of the Watson settlement is related to the Diddy cases:
The NFL is not required but generally provides a statement when investigations are opened and closed. Until that or another official report, Watson’s future will continue to be up in the air but the confidential nature of the settlement will likely close the book on this allegation and investigation.
