An in-depth look at how the offense has fared on a down-by-down basis this season

The Cleveland Browns' offense has been completely abysmal in almost every aspect throughout the first 5 games of the season, and the advanced metrics help us understand why.

Kevin Stefanski and Ken Dorsey need to take a step back and look at this offense from an efficiency standpoint. Yes, throwing the ball more often increases the chances of explosive plays, but it comes at the expense of overall consistency which is what Stefanski has been known for as of late.

The metrics below paint a picture of an atrocious offense on multiple key downs, specifically on 1st and 3rd downs throughout the 2024 regular season so far:

1st Down

  • 10.4 average yards to go
  • 126 plays
  • 3.63 average yards gained overall
  • 55 rushes, 3.7 yards per carry
  • 65 passes, 4.4 yards gained per attempt
  • 83.4 pass rating
  • 12 total 1st downs

2nd Down

  • 8.24 average yards to go
  • 107 plays
  • 4.36 average yards gained overall
  • 29 rushes, 4.7 yards per carry
  • 72 passes, 5.0 yards gained per attempt
  • 63.5 passer rating
  • 34 total 1st downs

3rd Down

  • 8.95 average yards to go
  • 66 plays
  • 3.12 average yards gained overall
  • 18 rushes, 4.1 yards per carry
  • 37 passes, 5.6 yards gained per attempt
  • 77.3 passer rating
  • 12 total first downs
  • 18.18% 3rd down conversion rate (Last in the NFL by far)

4th Down

  • 2.93 average yards to go
  • 15 plays
  • 4.53 average yards gained overall
  • 9 rushes, 7.9 yards per carry
  • 3 passes, 3.3 yards gained per attempt
  • 83.3 passer rating
  • 9 total first downs

Something needs to change incredibly fast or there won’t be an opportunity to turn the season around anymore regarding offensive effectiveness.
