A record that has stood for 58-years.
There haven’t been a lot of rookie quarterbacks to play for the Denver Broncos and even fewer are worth remembering.
In 1968, Broncos Marlin Briscoe threw for 14-touchdowns and set the bar for rookie quarterback success in Denver. Even during his rookie season, John Elway didn’t throw for that many.
Can you imagine a season where the great John Elway threw for fewer than 14-touchdowns? Kind of blows the mind when you think about it.
On Sunday, Bo Nix connected with Devaughn Vele and Courtland Sutton to add 2 more touchdowns, bringing his season total to 10-passing touchdowns through 10-games. For the first time in Broncos history, it looks like a rookie QB is going to take down one of the oldest records in the Broncos books.
Despite his success, Marlin Briscoe would be replaced by quarterback Pete Liske in the 1969 season. As a result, he asked for and received his release from the Broncos. How good could Briscoe have been for Denver? We may never know. Briscoe went on be a part of two Super Bowl teams (VII & VIII) for the Miami Dolphins (including their infamous undefeated season) as a wide receiver.
Make no mistake, Bo Nix is in no danger of being replaced. His 10-touchdowns are just the beginning of what Broncos Country hopes is going to be a long and successful career. There are many lofty records at the quarterback position in Denver. It’s exciting to see a young quarterback going after them.
