Kansas City falls to 9-1, ending their winning streak at 15 games
Before a national audience on Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs dropped a 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. It also ended the team’s 15-game winning streak and kept Buffalo in the race for the AFC’s No. 1 postseason seed.
The Chiefs started with the ball — but immediately lost it when quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a wounded duck while being tackled. Buffalo intercepted, getting the ball at their own 35-yard line. Quarterback Josh Allen’s 30-yard pass to Amari Cooper put the Bills well across midfield. Five plays later, Allen found running back James Cook for a 3-yard touchdown pass that gave Buffalo a 6-0 lead after Tyler Bass’ extra point was wide right.
The Bills’ defense earned a three-and-out by sacking Mahomes on third-and-5. The Buffalo offense started at their own 40 after a penalty, gained a first down but couldn’t convert a third-and-8 when Trent McDuffie chased Allen deep into the backfield, forcing an incompletion.
The Chiefs’ next drive featured three passes to rookie wideout Xavier Worthy that gained 51 yards and three first downs. Then from the 10-yard line, Mahomes went back to Worthy for a touchdown reception that gave the Chiefs a 7-6 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
Buffalo drove 70 yards on nine plays — including 24-yard throws to Cooper and tight end Dawson Knox — to take a 13-7 lead. Kansas City then went three-and-out after Worthy could not bring in a 40-yard catch on first down — and after a 25-yard punt return, the Bills started at Kansas City’s 41-yard line. But on fourth-and-3 at the 34, Allen threw an interception to Kansas City’s Chamarri Conner, who returned it to the Bills’ 40.
Tight end Noah Gray gained 14 yards on a catch-and-run. Wideout Mecole Hardman got inside the 20 with a 9-yard gain. Tight end Peyton Hendershot made it a first-and-goal with a contested catch at the 2-yard line. On third down, Mahomes found Gray in the end zone to give the Chiefs a 14-13 lead with 2:41 left in the half.
Buffalo ran an excellent two-minute drive to get inside the Kansas City 20-yard line — but the Chiefs held on third-and-11 from the 15-yard line, forcing the field goal that gave Buffalo a 16-14 lead at halftime.
Each defense collected a three-and-out to open the second half. Buffalo’s second drive stalled at midfield. The Chiefs got a pair of first downs before a holding penalty on Wanya Morrris put them behind the sticks, forcing a punt. A pass interference penalty against Conner kept Kansas City from collecting another three-and-out — and Khalil Shakir’s 22-yard catch-and-run took the Bills to the Chiefs’ 27-yard line. On the fourth play of the fourth quarter, Allen found wide receiver Curtis Samuel for a 12-yard touchdown that extended Buffalo’s lead to 23-14.
