In another losing season, there is hope on the horizon for the Chicago Bears. For that, I am thankful.
This might be the most difficult question posed to Chicago Bears fans this season: what are you thankful for?
There is so much to feel cynical about. So much to be angry about. So much to be frustrated about. Bears fandom feels like the movie Groundhog Day, except we are all Bill Murray, and Punxsutawney Phil is a Head Coach that’s only elite trait is ruining quarterbacks.
It’s been a rough go with little to cheer for since Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman, and Hester roamed the field. There have been some moments, sure, but rarely anything worth feeling truly thankful for.
While many of us entered this season expecting a better result than last only to be met with another uniquely disappointing season, I am here to say that I am thankful for the future of this franchise. Namely, Caleb Williams.
I will own my clickbaity article a few weeks back asking if Caleb was broken. I didn’t think he was, but given the history of the franchise, I felt it was a question worth asking. Since then, Caleb Williams has answered that question resoundingly. No, he is not broken. He is instead here to fix a broken franchise. In his last two games, against two division rivals who have a combined record of 17-5, Caleb has thrown for 571 yards, 2 Touchdowns, 0 Interceptions, and 103 yards rushing. He has answered the call.
In both games, he has led his team to definitively clutch 4th quarter drives to win and to tie the game. Neither has led to a victory, but not because of Caleb’s play.
A few weeks ago, I, like many of us, was worried that our can’t-miss, unstoppable prospect would be met by our substandard immovable object organization and loss.
But for the first time in a very long time, I have real hope. Caleb Williams looks uniquely capable of rising above this organization's stink. We have a long way to go, but I think Caleb is going to take us there. For that, I am thankful.
Now it’s your turn - what are you thankful for as a Bears fan? Sound off in the comments!
