Leo Chenal: Steve Spagnuolo shot down talk of letting Broncos score TD | NBC Sports

Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal mentioned that possibility while discussing the blocked field goal that sealed the ninth Kansas City win of the season.

“We were thinking about like all right maybe we should let them score here,” Chenal said by phone following the 16-14 win. “Give our offense a chance to get the ball back but Coach [Steve Spagnuolo], I mean one of the best if not the best defensive coordinator of all time, and he was fighting, ‘No . . . we’re not going to do that, we trust our guys and we are going to get a stop here.’”

He was right. They got the stop, and then they blocked the field goal and emerged with the most unlikely win in a season full of unlikely wins.

DeAndre Hopkins takes a tiny step forward: Hopkins stayed on the field a little more often than last week but was still rotated out more than Justin Watson and Xavier Worthy.

The Chiefs’ top three wide receivers remained the same as last week, but they adjusted how they used their wide receivers.

Last week, all three played roughly two-thirds of their snaps out wide and one-third from the slot. Most of Hopkins’ receptions came at the X-receiver spot, leading to more receptions than anyone has received from Mahomes while lined up out wide and on the line of scrimmage. Hopkins’ role was fairly similar this week. He again caught one big pass from the slot, but most of his receptions came lined up out wide.

NFL Week 10 overreactions: Sam Darnold a problem for Vikings? Chiefs not best in AFC? Cowboys next to fire HC? | CBS Sports

Best team in AFC isn’t Chiefs

Overreaction or reality: Overreaction

Kansas City just keeps finding ways to win football games, even when a loss appears to be staring the Chiefs in the face. Broncos kicker Wil Lutz had a 35-yard field goal attempt that — if converted — would have been one of the biggest upsets of the season. Instead, Leo Chenal blocked the chip shot and the Chiefs improved to 9-0, surviving an ugly performance against one of the NFL’s top defenses.

Are the Chiefs as good as their unbeaten record indicates? Probably not, but Kansas City is the best team in the AFC. The Chiefs are a second-half team anyway, which has been a staple of Andy Reid teams for over two decades. Patrick Mahomes is also starting to find his stride in the passing game as well, not having a turnover on Sunday.

The Chiefs can solidify their stranglehold on the AFC in 2024 next week with a win over the Bills.
