Kansas City’s head coach joined media members for his usual Monday Zoom call.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met with the media via Zoom on Monday, less than 24 hours after the team’s first season loss, a 30-21 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

In his opening statement, the head coach said he had no injury updates before sharing some thoughts on the game. Reid said he emphasized to the team that every single series is important and that mistakes can be magnified in big games like the one on Sunday. He closed his opening statement by praising kicker Spencer Shrader, who made all three extra points in the game.

Then Reid took questions, which we have rounded up in four takeaways:

Reid mentioned “backing off” on particular looks, which might allow the team to play faster.

Under his own volition, Reid noted that perhaps the coaching staff could simplify some of the offensive and defensive concepts.

“Maybe it’s motions or shifts or that type of thing on the offensive side,” said Reid. “I haven’t gone through it with [defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo] yet, but they’re little things, but sometimes little things can add up.”

Playing fast (without thinking) becomes more critical against higher-quality teams such as the Bills.

After watching the tape, Reid shared his thoughts on what went wrong on the deep shot to Xavier Worthy early in the game.

Here’s another look at the play:

“[Patrick Mahomes] could have seen him earlier — that's part of it,” started Reid. “But once you’re there, he could have dragged his foot to keep it in. He’ll be able to chalk that one up to experience. Again, what Pat told you [after the game] is true, and so that combination.

“Those are the little things, though. You’re talking about seven points there against a good football team. We got to make sure we take care of business on both ends there.”

Reid shared his view on the defensive effort on the fourth-down run by Josh Allen to seal the game.

With the game on the line, the Chiefs’ defense failed to get the Bills quarterback to the ground as he ran for a 26-yard touchdown.

“That’s a tough thing to do, especially when you’re right there,” said Reid. “Listen. This was not an effort problem on either side of the ball. It was just an execution part. You want to try to stay in your lanes. Sometimes when it extends that long, it’s tough thing to do. The guy’s moving around. All of a sudden, those lanes become skewed just a little bit.

“But I appreciate the effort on it. The guy made a great play. We’ll go back and learn from the thing and see what we can do better on it.”

Reid commented on the fact that Kingsley Suamataia was inactive for the game.

The Chiefs decided ahead of the game to take the second-round rookie out of the mix....
