Kansas City’s head coach joined media members for his usual Monday Zoom call.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met with the media via Zoom on Monday, less than 24 hours after the team’s 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos.
In his opening statement, Reid acknowledged that even though the Chiefs won, they have much to work on ahead of the Week 11 game against the Buffalo Bills. Specifically on offense, Reid emphasized the team’s lack of success in the red zone, taking too many penalties and missing what could have been touchdowns.
On the game-saving play, Reid highlighted the impact of safety Justin Reid, noting the threat of his speed on the team’s field-goal unit, which allowed Leo Chenal to make the game-winning play.
Then Reid took questions, which we have rounded up in four takeaways:
After starting left tackle Wanya Morris had to leave the game early in the second quarter due to injury, rookie Kingsley Suamataia struggled to keep quarterback Patrick Mahomes protected. Morris would eventually reenter the game, doing enough to allow the Chiefs to score.
The sequence led to an X exchange between former Chiefs offensive linemen Jeff Allen and Donovan Smith — and Smith hinted about his availability.
Unsurprisingly, Reid did not provide a definitive comment on the matter.
“That’s (general manager) [Brett] Veach’s area,” noted Reid. “He looks at everything, so I’m not going to say, ‘No.’ But what we do as coaches and we overemphasize: we’re going to focus in on these kids that are here, and they’re getting better.
“I know it’s hard to see at times, but there’s progress being made, and we’re going to be OK as we go forward.”
The head coach was asked about the upcoming availability of Smith-Schuster, defensive lineman Charles Omenihu (who remains on the PUP list) and running back Isiah Pacheco (on the Reserve/Injured list).
“I think they’re all close,” said Reid. “I would probably tell you JuJu closer than the other two. But I would tell you that we might have him out there. We’ll just see how it goes here [Monday] and [Tuesday]. They’re very close — all three of them.”
In back-to-back games, the duo came tantalizingly close to what could have been long, game-changing touchdowns.
“They’ve had a couple of them,” said Reid. “We’ve just got to keep it a little bit more consistent. They’ll keep working on it. They spend time working on it, and we’ll just keep it going. Those things, they’ll come eventually here as we go with a little bit more consistency.”
Perhaps Reid dials up a few more shots against Buffalo in Week 11.
