Tomorrow is a critical day. The NFL’s trade deadline is upon us, and with the news of Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings, Jonathan Feliciano, and Jake Moody all returning, the 49ers have a chance to get greedy and add to their reinforcements. Baltimore, Kansas City, and even Arizona have added before the deadline.

The question is: Which position will the 49ers be buyers for at the deadline?

Defensive Line

The 49ers lost Javon Hargrave for the season with the possibility of Hargrave returning during the playoffs. Sammy O has been a revelation, and Leonard Floyd has been steady as Nick Bosa’s running mate. However, the 49ers have shown they will address the defensive line at the deadline following 2023’s deadline acquisitions of Randy Gregory and Chase Young.

Available targets are Azeez Ojulari, Za’Darius Smith, and former 49er Arden Key. The Giants are unlikely to re-sign Ojulari, so it makes sense to move on from the young pass rusher and recoup draft compensation. The Browns and Titans seasons are dead in the water, so Smith and Key are fits. One more name to monitor is Dalvin Tomlinson. The 49ers could use his experience at defensive tackle. The same goes for Calais Campbell.

Wide Receiver

Brandon Aiyuk is down for the season, but Jennings has returned, and Ricky Pearsall has contributed in his two games this season. Given the draft compensation for Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, the 49ers are confident with the players in the building, but another experienced receiver isn’t the worst idea.

Mike Williams, Adam Theilen, and Kendrick Bourne are three names to watch. It’s hard to visualize how any of the three will see the field, with Deebo Samuel, Jennings, and Pearsall as the top three options. The injury bug is all over the NFL, so be proactive and not reactive.

As far as linebacker and secondary, the 49ers are set. Dre Greenlaw should return soon, and De’Vondre Campbell will be valuable depth. Renardo Green, Deommodore Lenoir, and Mooney Ward are set as the three cornerbacks. Jonathan Jones of New England could be available, but the 49ers will likely look for defensive line help. It’s hard to argue with their confidence in other positions, given how well the draft class has performed.
