Jake Moody’s return is imminent, so there was no need for an additional kicker.
The San Francisco 49ers released kicker Anders Carlson from the practice squad.
Carlson performed how you’d expect a kicker who was signed in the middle of October to perform. He made all five field goal attempts, including both from 50+. But there was a crucial missed extra-point attempt against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Jake Moody has been sidelined since Week 5 with a high-ankle sprain. On Monday, Moody told reporters, “There’s always a chance” that he could play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday.
According to Adam Schefter, the 49ers also signed safety Tashaun Gipson to the practice squad. Gipson was signed off the street ahead of the 2022 season and was a valuable contributor for two seasons on defense.
The Jacksonville Jaguars released Gipson on Monday from the NFL commissioner’s exempt list. He has not played in a game this season.
Gipson joins veteran safety Adrian Amos on the practice squad. The 49ers are hopeful that Talanoa Hufanga can return at some point this season. But Amos and Gipson are veterans who can cover kicks and will provide much-needed experience on special teams.
Linebacker Jalen Graham was also waived from the active. That could be a signal that Dre Greenlaw is trending closer to a return. There is now one roster spot that needs to be created if the 49ers intend to activate Christian McCaffrey.
