The Indianapolis Colts unveiled their final unofficial depth chart ahead of the team’s preseason finale on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium on Saturday afternoon (1 PM EST).
Here were a few of the takeaways:
OFFENSE
So many thoughts…
The story broke that Shane Steichen named Daniel Jones the starter for the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. Since that moment, opinions, feelings, and declarations have been flying around the internet. Some fans love the move, stating Anthony Richardson was a sunk cost and there was no reason to waste more time on him. Others, found the move to be premature as it essentially declares the end for Richardson in Indianapolis. Plenty more couldn’t fully wrap their heads around the decision. I find myself in the third camp; filled with thoughts and questions. Here are just a few....
The Colts entered their second preseason game against the Packers with a clear goal: evaluate both quarterbacks at the top of the roster. Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson each saw extended work, offering very different but equally telling performances. While neither clearly separated from the other, the game once again underscored the “floor versus ceiling” debate at the heart of Indianapolis’ quarterback decision.
The Colts ended up going with Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season, but as you’ll see Jones didn’t necessarily play better or prove that he deserved to be the starting...
The never-ending carousel will continue as Daniel Jones is set to become the eighth different Week 1 starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts over the last nine season openers.
Indianapolis’ QB competition started in OTAs and spanned through 13 training camp practices at Grand Park and two preseason games. Colts head coach Shane Steichen ultimately determined the conservative veteran who signed in free agency is better equipped to operate his offense than the first player he advocated to draft.
The New York Giants released Jones after a 2-8 record through 10 starts last season. Jones received a second lifeline to...
According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, the trust between demoted Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson’s camp and the Indianapolis Colts organization could be quickly deteriorating following head coach Shane Steichen’s somewhat surprising decision to choose veteran Daniel Jones as the team’s new starter instead:
“The agent, Deiric Jackson, stopped short of demanding a trade, but he wondered aloud whether coach Shane Steichen’s quarterback decision might have been predetermined when the Colts signed Jones in March to a one-year, $14 million contract,” writes Holder.
“‘We have a lot to discuss,’ Jackson told ESPN of his impending conversations with the...
After a training camp and preseason battle with both Daniel Jones and third-year QB Anthony Richardson splitting starting snaps, the Colts decide on Daniel Jones to be the Week 1 starter vs the Miami Dolphins. Richardson notably didn’t get to play in the preseason with the majority of the starters, either due to his teammates’ injuries/rest or being the 2nd QB in the Week 2 preseason game, coming in at the start of the 2nd Quarter. The...
Shane Steichen states he would like to come to a decision on the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts sooner rather than later. It appears the ultimate decision is near, yet the debate among fans continues and will do so even after the starter is named. Will it be Anthony Richardson; the young explosive yet often injured incumbent, or will it be Daniel Jones; the veteran who strategically planted himself in Indy for his best chance at a starting role? Fans have been told all offseason it was a two man race and both options were on the table. Unfortunately,...
The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that the team placed rookie SAF Hunter Wohler on injured reserve, along with offensive tackle Blake Freeland and linebacker Jacob Phillips.
The team also officially signed veteran free agent cornerback Xavien Howard in a corresponding roster move.
Wohler suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury (foot) and is reportedly ‘likely’ to undergo surgery.
Obviously, it’s another tough blow to the Colts secondary, which has already lost another promising rookie, Justin Walley, to a season-ending injury—with Wohler now joining him. Wohler had played well in preseason and training camp and was expected to make an impact,...
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Indianapolis Colts are among the suitors that have expressed interest in trading for Cincinnati Bengals All-Pro pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who’s still seeking a multi-year mega-contra extension from his current club:
The 30-year-old returning NFL First-Team All-Pro, and the league’s reigning sack king with 17.5 total sacks in 2024, did report to Bengals training camp, but did not participate in practices due to an ongoing contract dispute with Cincinnati—as neither side has been able to reach a resolution yet.
Hendrickson is entering the last year of his current contract with the Bengals, with...
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Indianapolis Colts are signing former Miami Dolphins All-Pro veteran cornerback Xavien Howard:
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Howard’s new Indy deal is for 1-year and up to $5 million with incentives.
Dealing with reported legal issues, the 32-year-old cornerback last played for the Dolphins during the 2023 season, in which he recorded 45 tackles (36 solo), a tackle for loss, 12 passes defensed, and an interception in 13 starts. Per PFF, that final season in Miami he received a +55.1 overall grade.
Of course, the Colts are currently very injury depleted at cornerback....
After suffering a pinkie injury vs. the Ravens, Anthony Richardson got a chance to make an impression last Saturday in the midst of this ongoing QB battle. Let’s breakdown some of the key plays from his performance.
The first attempt of the game came in a backed-up scenario on the -10. The Colts are running a Smash-Drive concept. Smash (Corner+Out) is the concept that Gould and Mitchell are running, while Drive (Shallow+Basic) is the concept Dulin and Ogletree are running. Without being in the meeting room, my best guess is this is a pure progression read. That means that Anthony...
Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Blake Freeland appeared to suffer a gruesome, severe leg injury during Saturday’s preseason loss against the Green Bay Packers.
His head coach, Shane Steichen, confirmed postgame that it’s a fractured leg:
Freeland came in relief of injured veteran starter Braden Smith at right tackle on Saturday and has been competing throughout training camp and preseason for the team’s top backup swing-tackle role.
He suffered the injury after run blocking in the 2nd quarter, and his right leg had to be stabilized as trainers tended to him, with teammates gathering around to offer their support.
The former...
