Midterm grades are in for the 2024 Houston Texans

Midterm grades are in for the 2024 Houston Texans

Not great, but maybe not as terrible as last Thursday Night suggests

Hard as it is to believe, the NFL regular season is half over. With that somewhat depressing fact out of the way, may as well take the time to review the Houston Texans’ at the mid-terms.

First Half Stats/Standings:

  • Overall Record: 6-3
  • Home Record: 4-0
  • Road Record: 2-3
  • Division Record: 3-0
  • Current AFC Playoff Seeding: 4
  • AFC South Division Standing: 1st (2 games up on the Indianapolis Colts with the season series clinched 2-0)
  • Offensive ranks: 348.1 yds/game (11th), 221.7 passing...

Battle Red Blog Groupthink: Bobby Slowik Chopping Block

Houston’s offense is in turmoil. Do they need to hit the big red button?

There’s been enough time to think rationally about the demoralizing loss to the putrid New York Jets. Whether relevant or not now that Kenyon Green is gone and Nico Collins is back, that game illustrated the floor at which the Texans offense can operate.

When I proposed this question to the Masthead I was enraged post-game. Sure, I want something to burn. This offense has failed to impress and with the Stefon Diggs injury will never live up to its potential. We’ll have to live in...

Quiet Deadline comes and goes for the Texans

Quiet Deadline comes and goes for the Texans

Texans add a 2026 7th rounder in a sell low move

The trade deadline passed a 4 PM eastern standard time on Tuesday and your Houston Texans did make a move. They traded backup defensive tackle Khalil Davis to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2026 seventh round. It could be a banner draft in 2026 as the club also did a pick swap with the Minnesota Vikings when they traded Cam Akers there earlier this year.

It was a disappointing end to a disappointing day. The club full well knows they need left guard help. However you...

Evaluating the Texans Odds Against the Detroit Lions

The Houston Texans will host the Detroit Lions in a matchup of the AFC South and NFC North Division leaders. Two playoff hopefuls square off on Sunday Night Football in Houston. The “consequences” of this game in the greater scheme of the season are all about maintaining the lead. Houston has a two game lead against the the AFC South while the Lions are playing to maintain control of the NFC as a whole.

The last time these two teams faced off was in 2020 and the Texans dominated 41-25. Houston has...

Monday Night Football Open Thread: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Kansas City Chiefs

Monday Night Football Open Thread: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Kansas City Chiefs

Look, I promise, no pirate-related puns this week.

Seeing DeAndre Hopkins in a Kansas City Chiefs jersey just looks weird. He’s wearing 8 instead of his usual 10, the color scheme is all wrong, it just feels unnatural. That said, him wearing that is better for the soul (his, I’m sure, if nobody else’s) than the atrocity that is the Tennessee Titans.

It’s Monday Night Football for week 9! Tonight, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to the city so impressive that all anybody talks about is fountains, a city with a severe identity crisis, to take on the Kansas City...

Houston Texans need to replace offensive line coach?

Houston Texans need to replace offensive line coach?

Talent is on the line, execution isn’t.

When you face the New York Jets, authors of the infamous Butt-Fumble play, it’s hard for your offensive line to overcome the specter of that historic mishap. Unfortunately, Chris Strausser, Houston Texans offensive line coach, helped his unit do just that.

When head coach DeMeco Ryans announced Strausser was joining the staff in early 2023, a fair bit of head scratching came with it.

Exactly why the Texans offensive line is playing so poorly right now remains a mystery, but the results of said poor play was on display for all to see...

Value of Things: By the numbers— Texans vs. Jets

Value of Things: By the numbers— Texans vs. Jets

What was the good, bad, and ugly from the Texans 21-13 loss?

This is usually a next day feature here at Battle Red Blog. Having a Thursday night game affords me the advantage of running this on Monday while also having a few days to cool off following the defeat. Hopefully, this makes the analysis more dispassionate than it would have been on Friday morning.

This is just a reminder that we are looking at more than just the game between the Houston Texans and New York Jets. We are looking at the whole season and now that we are...

Sunday Night Football Open Thread: Indianapolis Colts at Minnesota Vikings

Sunday Night Football Open Thread: Indianapolis Colts at Minnesota Vikings

It’s a battle of midwestern teams tonight on SNF.

Welcome to the end of the Sunday schedule for week 9. As you have noticed, the Houston Texans have not featured because they decided to lay an egg on Thursday night instead.

Good for them, get it out of the way early, I say.

In the meantime, we have a midwestern hootenanny between the Indianapolis Colts, who will not feature Anthony Richardson because he was tired or something, and the Minnesota Vikings who are somehow winning despite having Sam Darnold as their quarterback.

Go figure.

The Day After the Day After: Post-mortem on the Houston Texans’ loss to the New Jersey Jets

The Day After the Day After: Post-mortem on the Houston Texans’ loss to the New Jersey Jets

That was an ugly game, even by Thursday Night standards and no one should be forced to watch that ever again…let’s review.

The Day After the Day After...when the raw, immediate emotions from the aftermath of a game diminish into the realm of clarity and the proverbial (or literal) hangover no longer haunts the mind. With that, a review of Week 9:

That pass protection…or lack thereof: At this point, this feels like a repeat of previous observations. The offensive line could not protect CJ Stroud. The interior of the line, especially left guard, can’t even act as a temporary...
