PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in tight end Robert Tonyan for a pro tryout at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Tonyan has ties to head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as he played five seasons with the Green Bay Packers (2017-22).

Tonyan, who went undrafted out of Indiana State, was signed to the Packers’ practice squad for the final four games of the 2017 season, and was re-signed for the 2018 season. His first NFL reception was a 54-yard touchdown from Rodgers against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11 of 2018.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig reported to practice for the team’s mandatory minicamp at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Tuesday, but he did not participate in drills during the portion of practice open to the media.

Herbig is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is seeking and extension. He did not take part in any of the first two weeks of the team’s voluntary OTA practices.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released veteran defensive back Makari Paige ahead of opening mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. This is in correspondence with the team officially signing former Buffalo Bills safety Darnell Savage.

Paige was signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan last April. He was released at the end of the preseason. The Steelers signed Paige on May 13.

In a corresponding move to signing veteran safety Darnell Savage Jr., the Pittsburgh Steelers have released defensive back Makari Paige.

Paige, 24, is a 6-foot-3, 208-pound defensive back. He was signed as an undrafted free agent of the New York Giants out of Michigan in 2025. He was released by the Giants last August and did not sign with another team.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed at mandatory minicamp on Tuesday that the team will hiring a replacement for senior assistant special teams coach Derius Swinton II, who was fired last week.

The Steelers and Swinton parted ways due to violation of club policy. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the dismissal was due to “workplace misconduct.”
