Will Micah Parsons play on Sunday for the Green Bay Packers? It seems that the team is trying to leave that as a bit of an open question, listing him as limited on the first two injury reports of the week and refusing to confirm whether or not they plan to make him active for the team’s week one game against the Detroit Lions.

The Green Bay Packers have extended punter Daniel Whelan, the team announced on Thursday. Whelan was a great find from the team, as he joined the roster via the XFL’s DC Defenders in May of 2023. After beating out Pat O’Donnell that summer, he’s been the Packers’ starting punter.

Whelan was set to be a restricted free agent after the 2025 season, which means Green Bay would have had to use a $3.5 million right of first refusal tender on the punter to ensure that he didn’t hit unrestricted free agency, had the team not extended him.

Beyond just the nuts and bolts of the injury report, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, who is coming off of UCL surgery on his left thumb, is one of the bigger storylines going into Week 1, despite being a full participant in practice. According to head coach Matt LaFleur in his post-practice press conference, Love hasn’t been handing off the ball with his left hand at all in practice this week.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, both receiver Jayden Reed (foot) and cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee) have returned to practice on Thursday. Yesterday, Reed and Hobbs were the only non-participants in Green Bay.

Reed is reportedly dealing with a Jones fracture in his foot, which he’s described as more of a pain issue than anything else. Meanwhile, Hobbs is recovering from a meniscus issue that he had surgery for this summer. This is the first time that Hobbs has practiced since the end of July.

When healthy, Reed is the Packers’ starting slot receiver, and Hobbs is a hybrid cornerback/slot defender....

In the grand scheme of things, it’s probably not ideal to face a divisional opponent in the first week of the season. It’s even less ideal to face the team that won your division last season.

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has been non-committal about the status of new defensive end Micah Parsons. While general manager Brian Gutekunst stated last Friday that Parsons will “help us in some form or fashion” versus the Detroit Lions in Week 1, LaFleur said “we’ll see” when it came to Parsons’ Week 1 game participation ahead of Wednesday’s practice. Parsons was officially listed as limited for Green Bay’s practice yesterday.

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Carolina Panthers were one of the teams that were interested in trading for Micah Parsons, but they were unwilling to include defensive tackle Derrick Brown in the deal. Apparently, Kenny Clark really was a big part of the trade, at least on the Dallas Cowboys’ end.

Now, Adam Schefter is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles “made a strong play” to trade for Parsons. Ultimately, the Cowboys “had no interest in trading Parsons in the division,” per Schefter.

Micah Parsons isn’t going to be the only new starter on Green Bay’s defense this year. Over the years, the Green Bay Packers’ offense under head coach Matt LaFleur has had some ebbs and flows when it comes to red zone success. In 2019, LaFleur’s second year with the team, they converted 68 percent of their red zone opportunities into touchdowns, good for the second-best mark in the NFL for that season. In 2020, they followed that up with an amazing 77 percent red zone touchdown rate, which topped the league.
