Opponent Preview: The Los Angeles Chargers

Opponent Preview: The Los Angeles Chargers

The Colts return to the site of their only loss in the 2025 season thus far, this time to take on the AFC tenant of SoFi Stadium: the LA Chargers. Like their stadium-mates Rams, the Chargers represent a tough test for the Colts to further prove their legitimacy atop the NFL’s upper echelon. The Chargers are 3rd in the AFC heading into Week 7 at 4-2 in a 5 way tie with the Patriots, Bills, Jaguars, and Broncos (in that order). The Colts stand atop the AFC at 5-1, and only the Steelers stand in between the Week 7 opponents...

First place Colts have important stretch heading into the bye

First place Colts have important stretch heading into the bye

Fans have been smiling as their Indianapolis Colts find themselves in first place in the AFC six weeks into the season. There have been easy wins, nail bitters, disappointments, and head scratchers. All of that has added up to the best overall record and a great place to be a third of the way through the season. Things are starting to pick up with some major games heading into the bye however that will shape things to come.

Road games against the Chargers and Steelers are by far the toughest and best tests to prove whether the Colts are for...

Colts’ Opponent Report: Week 7 @Chargers

Colts’ Opponent Report: Week 7 @Chargers

Throughout this series we will be analyzing the Colts’ upcoming opponent through a more general lens, in order to have a proper understanding about who we are facing.

Momentum

An amazing play by Justin Herbert and Ladd McConkey prevented what would have been a three-game losing streak for the Chargers, narrowly beating the Miami Dolphins with a game-winning field goal. The Chargers have been ravaged by injuries (more on that later), but are still a very dangerous team to face. The Commanders and Giants made life difficult for Herbert because of the pass-rushing capabilities of their defensive lines, something...

Colts waive former starting LB off injured reserve

Colts waive former starting LB off injured reserve

Per the league transaction wire, the Indianapolis Colts waived former starting linebacker Joe Bachie (foot) off of injured reserve.

Signed by the Colts this past offseason to 1-year, $1.2 million deal, the former Cincinnati Bengals core special teamer reunited with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo in Indianapolis.

Only with the Colts’ lack of proven linebacker options alongside returning All-Pro Zaire Franklin at linebacker, Bachie played pretty well in training camp and preseason, ultimately winning the other starting linebacker job outright.

Bachie started 5 games for Indianapolis, recording 26 tackles (11 solo) and a pass defensed.

Per PFF, he earned just a...

Indianapolis Colts Injury Report: CB Moore Returns To Practice

The Indianapolis Colts today released their Wednesday injury report for Week 6 of the NFL season ahead of their Sunday game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Wide receiver Josh Downs missed practice today due to a concussion. Downs took a big hurt during his touchdown catch which could have been the cause of his concussion. Downs will now enter into the leagues concussion protocol.

Wide receiver Ashton Dulin missed practice today with a chest injury. Dulin saw his snap count on the offense increase when he filled in for the injured Pierce the last few weeks. Even managed to get a...

Week 6 Film Breakdown: Colts battle for 60 Minutes vs. Arizona Cardinals

Week 6 Film Breakdown: Colts battle for 60 Minutes vs. Arizona Cardinals

In times like these, I remind myself that the NFL is the ultimate “week-to-week league”. It does not matter if you are 0-5 or 5-0, you can get beat every single Sunday if you aren’t at your best.

If you’re an NFL fan or tune in to a press conference, you’ve heard every cliche in the book. “It’s hard to win in this league”, “It’s about going 1-0 every single week”.. you know the ones I’m talking about.

The reality is that they are all 100% true.

In college football resumes are king and style points matter. But in the...

Week 6 Colts Offensive Rankings and Analysis

Week 6 Colts Offensive Rankings and Analysis

Each week during the season, I will be walking through the data from the previous Colts game and analyzing the numbers to form a sort of “what happened” narrative, as well as comparing the Colts against all other teams in the league. For a glossary of the stats listed, reference Season Stats. Thanks to Pro Football Reference, NFL.com****, Pro Football Focus** and the** nflFastR project for being awesome sources of weekly data.

Ho hum — another week, another great Colts offense.

Indy had no trouble marching down the field, picking up 25 first downs and reaching the end zone...

How competitive can the Colts be in a suddenly less daunting AFC?

How competitive can the Colts be in a suddenly less daunting AFC?

One of the things that may have made the last 6 – 8 years of midland results somewhat bearable, is the fact that even on our good days, it was hard to see us advancing in a loaded AFC. If the beast that has been the Chiefs were going to be dethroned, it was a common perception that it would be the Bills, Ravens, or possibly the Bengals that would be doing the damage. After all, we have had no one in the same area code of talent to Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, or Burrow. Heck, we were not even on...

Colts’ Week 6 QB Analysis: Another successful game

Thanks to the nflFastR project, Pro Football Focus and NFL NextGen Stats for the timely sources of data.

For those of you new to this, I will publish key QB stats each week judging how well the Colts’ QB performed. Yes, O-Line, receivers, and play-calling impact these numbers but they are primarily QB measures. I will probably modify the charts throughout the season. Commentary will be brief but feel free to let me know in the comments that stats aren’t everything. (click charts for larger view)

HOW WELL?

Report: Colts signing QB Brett Rypien to practice squad

Report: Colts signing QB Brett Rypien to practice squad

The Indianapolis Colts are signing quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The move comes after Indianapolis placed third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. on injured reserve Monday. According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, Richardson “was hospitalized after a pole that he had affixed an elastic stretch band to snapped during his pregame routine, resulting in the pole forcefully impacting his face.”

Rypien, 29, was most recently released by the Cincinnati Bengals following the trade for veteran quarterback, Joe Flacco. The Colts initially worked out four different quarterbacks on Tuesday, including Jeff Driskel, Jaren Hall, Tanner Mordecai...

Colts work out 7 players on Tuesday, including 4 QBs

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Indianapolis Colts worked out the following players on Tuesday: wide receiver Colton Dowell, quarterback Jeff Driskel, quarterback Jaren Hall, wide receiver Mecole Hardman, wide receiver Jordan Kerley, quarterback Tanner Mordecai, and quarterback Kyle Trask.

Of course, the biggest names on this list for me are Mecole Hardman, who Colts fans may remember most from his prior time with the Kansas City Chiefs as a deep threat. The former 2019 2nd round pick of Kansas City has 178 receptions for 2,302 total receiving yards and 16 touchdown receptions during 80 career games (28 starts).

Colts announce practice squad positional shuffle—with mammoth sized OT signing

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday that the team has signed offensive tackle Bayron Matos to the team’s practice squad and waived fellow offensive tackle Marcellus Johnson in a corresponding taxi squad move.

The Colts had worked out Matos among four players on Monday. He reportedly also recently worked out for both the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 6’7”, 334 pound Matos was the International Pathway Program Player from the Dominican Republic (where he was also a college basketball player) and was with the Miami Dolphins practice squad last season—having been waived by the Dolphins as part...
