Why the Detroit Lions present unique challenge to Rams’ offense

Why the Detroit Lions present unique challenge to Rams’ offense

One of the bigger narratives surrounding the Los Angeles Rams’ explosive offense is their newfound love of 13 personnel—one running back, three tight end sets. The Rams almost never used 13 personnel under head coach Sean McVay—only 84 times during McVay’s first nine seasons. But this year, the Rams lead the NFL in plays with 13 personnel, with a whopping 170 snaps—or 21.4% of the time. The league average 5.25%.

Last week against the Arizona Cardinals, that number jumped to 60%. Why? Well, the Rams’ offense has been trending in that direction more and more as of late. It also...

Discussion: Where do you want the Detroit Lions’ 2026 international game to be played?

According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions have been informed that they will play an international game in 2026. The news comes as little surprise considering new NFL rules will require teams to play a game in a different country every eight years, and the Lions haven’t done so since 2015.

However, the one important part missing from the news is where this international game will be played. That may not be decided for several months at this point, so today’s Question of the Day is:

Where do you want the Lions’ international game to...

Report: Detroit Lions will play international game in 2026

The Detroit Lions are going global.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions have been informed that they will play an international game in the 2026 NFL season. At this point, it’s unclear where the Lions will play, but the NFL has already announced that there will be international games played next year in Berlin, Germany, Melbourne, Australia, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and a couple of games in London, England—with more locations expected to be announced at a later date.

It’s worth noting the Lions have international marketing rights in Canada, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland....

Lions add veteran safety, waive another TE

The Detroit Lions continue to churn the bottom of the roster as they adjust to injuries. On Wednesday, they announced that they’ve claimed veteran safety Jalen Mills off waivers (from the Texans) and waived tight end Hayden Rucci in a corresponding move.

As a defensive back at LSU, Mills was drafted by the Eagles in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He began his career as a cornerback, but eventually shifted to safety in his fifth season. Following his rookie contract, Milles joined the Patriots for two seasons, then spent last year in New York, starting on the...

Frank Ragnow ‘has plenty in him’ to play, Lions’ door remains open

On Wednesday, Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley offered a little more insight into the crazy week that included Frank Ragnow coming out of retirement only to go back into retirement upon failing his physical. The All-Pro center was revealed to have had a Grade 3 hamstring spain that would have prevented him from playing in 2025 anyways.

According to Fraley, Ragnow was training the entire time, and the injury occurred then.

“Unfortunately, he got a little nicked up in his training. He’s been training the whole time,” Fraley said. “[…] but unfortunately it didn’t go that route. I’m...

Christian Mahogany returns to practice, starts injury evaluation clock

The Detroit Lions could be getting an important piece of their offensive line back soon, as starting left guard Christian Mahogany has returned to practice, which starts his 21-day injury evaluation clock.

In Week 9 against the Vikings, Mahogany suffered a lower leg injury after his leg swung into a defender, forcing him from the game. While initially labeled a knee injury, in the coming days, coach Dan Campbell acknowledged that Mahogany suffered a broken bone, which would give him a chance to return this season.

“For what the injury is—it’s a broken bone—relative to injuries, that’s a good thing,”...

Lions EDGE Al-Quadin Muhammad wins NFC DPOW

Another Detroit Lions player has won weekly honors from the NFL, but not one you’d normally think of. After his three-sack performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, Al-Quadin Muhammad has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Year.

It’s the fourth time a Lions player has been named Player of the Week, with Muhammad joining Jahmyr Gibbs (Weeks 10 and 12) and Jared Goff (Week 2). It’s the first time a Lions player has won NFC Defensive Player of the Week since Brian Branch in Week 6 of the 2024 season.

Muhammad, at 30 years old, is in...

Discussion: Which Detroit Lions player would you pull out of retirement?

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts signed quarterback Philip Rivers, who had been in retirement for five years and was a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the 2026 class. The 44-year-old quarterback could very well be the reason the Colts—at 8-5 but without starter Daniel Jones for the rest of the season—make the playoffs and potentially a Super Bowl run. It’s an incredible story, and almost seems too ridiculous to be true.

So let’s live in the ridiculous for a minute. Obviously, the Detroit Lions nearly had their own out-of-retirement story, with center Frank Ragnow returning to...

Detroit Lions scouting report: The Los Angeles Rams are a complete team

So we meet again, Matthew Stafford. The former Detroit Lions starting quarterback faces his former team for the fourth time in five years in Week 15. In the first matchup back in 2021, the Los Angeles Rams won 28-19, but since then, Stafford hasn’t defeated his former team. The Lions beat the Rams in the 2023 playoffs and in the 2024 season opener.

This season, the matchup has high stakes, as the Lions’ playoff chances are on the line, while the Rams fight to win their division. The Lions can still make the playoffs with a loss to the Rams,...
