James Houston needs a real shot to start for the Dallas Cowboys in Christian Parker’s new 3-4 defense.

I’m not saying James Houston is some perfect every-down linebacker, or that he needs to cover tight ends down the field because that isn’t what he is. But, a pass-rushing outside linebacker is what he needs to be.

By using the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens and re-signing running back Javonte Williams, the Dallas Cowboys offense should be much look exactly the same as it did a season ago. As of now, they have mainly focused on improving the defense, and rightfully so.

With the band back together, the Cowboys offense should once again be one of the better units in the league in 2026. That doesn’t mean they should be complacent though. There are some areas they can still stand to improve upon, such as running back behind Javonte Williams.

There is no denying that the Dallas Cowboys improved their defense this offseason. With how bad the 2025 unit was, the bar wasn’t very high, but Dallas’ defense looks much better on paper at this point than it did in May of 2025.

That isn’t to say the Cowboys’ defense is a finished product; far from it if we are being honest. There are still multiple positions where Dallas could use additional depth, and adding another pass rusher, cornerback, or inside linebacker seems most likely.
