Why the 49ers re-signed safety Tashaun Gipson

The 49ers brought back a familiar veteran safety to their squad on Wednesday.

The San Francisco 49ers brought back a familiar face on Wednesday, signing veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to the practice squad after the trade deadline concluded.

Gipson, who played with the 49ers in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons, had most recently been with the Jacksonville Jaguars after facing a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

The 34-year-old had been a full-time starter in each of the two seasons, recording five interceptions back in 2022 while being a consistent cog in the backend of the...

Why the 49ers are impressed by their rookie class

“After another loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Nick Bosawasn’t excited to go back and watch the tape. There was, however, one thing he wanted to see: after the loss, his father, John, alerted him to how well rookie safety Malik Mustapha played.

As a defensive end, Bosa doesn’t have the opportunity to see such things in real time, but when he did turn on the film, he co-signed his father’s take.

“He was like, Mustapha was flying around...

Russell Gage is the latest wideout to be added to the practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers announced a few transactions on Wednesday afternoon. The trade for former Houston Texans defensive tackle Khalil Davis is official.

The team also officially announced safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. to the practice squad. Additionally, wide receiver Russell Gage was added to the practice squad. Gage did not play in the NFL in 2023. He did play 573 snaps in 2022 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he had 51 receptions and 426 yards. Could the 49ers be trying to pry any info possible out...

What are the 49ers biggest weaknesses after the trade deadline?

What are the 49ers biggest weaknesses after the trade deadline?

The 49ers didn’t make a major move at the deadline this year.

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t very active at the trade deadline, making just one trade as they sent a 2026 seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans for defensive lineman Khalil Davis.

Davis, 28, is on a one-year deal with a minimum salary, and had been coming along more over the past three games, being used primary as an interior pass rusher with the Texans.

Heading into the deadline, it was clear the 49ers had a focus on improving their defensive line, but it was unclear to what extent...

NFL Insider explains why Christian McCaffrey will have no limitations if he plays this week

When Kyle Shanahan has an opportunity to use Christian McCaffrey, he does not hold back.

It’s not certain that we will see San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey play this week. McCaffrey hasn’t suited up all season after suffering a calf strain turned Achillies tendinitis injury that predates the regular season, which is why the Niners have been careful about their star player.

McCaffrey’s return comes at a perfect time, as Jordan Mason hasn’t been 100 percent after an AC sprain in his left shoulder. At the same time, rookie Isaac Guerendo continues to take advantage of his opportunities....

Why the 49ers didn’t make any splash moves at the trade deadline

There are plenty of reinforcements coming back from injury and ascending players on the roster who need more playing time

Unless you live in Houston, you’re unlikely to know much about the defensive tackle the San Francisco 49ers traded for on Tuesday.

The Niners needed another body along the defensive line, so they traded for Khalil Davis of the Houston Texans.

You were left disappointed if you were hoping for Calais Campbell, D.J. Jones, or a notable name at the deadline. After watching Davis, I see that he’s flashed as a run defender but has also been easily moved off...

Hutchinson: What to make of 49ers’ lone trade at deadline

“He had a 9.83 (out of 10) Relative Athletic Score coming out of Nebraska in 2020 and has been a rotation player.

That said, the tape shows an inconsistent player who often plays with a poor pad level. He has substantial strength and had one great game of shooting gaps with burst against the Patriots, but he’s been otherwise a mediocre player. That athleticism hasn’t matched with technique to this point, though he does have far more experience...

49ers re-sign an old friend at safety; release kicker from the practice squad

Jake Moody’s return is imminent, so there was no need for an additional kicker.

The San Francisco 49ers released kicker Anders Carlson from the practice squad.

Carlson performed how you’d expect a kicker who was signed in the middle of October to perform. He made all five field goal attempts, including both from 50+. But there was a crucial missed extra-point attempt against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jake Moody has been sidelined since Week 5 with a high-ankle sprain. On Monday, Moody told reporters, “There’s always a chance” that he could play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday.

49ers acquire another defensive lineman via trade from the Texans

49ers acquire another defensive lineman via trade from the Texans

The 49ers added some much-needed beef along the defensive line.

Just before the trade deadline, the San Francisco 49ers acquired defensive tackle Khalil Davis in a trade with the Houston Texans for a 2026 7th-round pick, according to a report by Dianna Russini.

Why did the 49ers trade for Davis?

The Niners had a clear need to bolster their depth along the defensive front and were seemingly able to get at least one deal done before the buzzer. While far from an impact player, Davis has been a solid rotational interior defensive lineman throughout his career.

The assumption might...
