Detroit Lions football under Dan Campbell has largely been rooted in trench play. For a team that boasts its physicality and grittiness, it makes sense for them to develop an identity that starts with the offensive and defensive lines. As they’ve said from the beginning, it all starts with running the ball and stopping the run—things you cannot do without strong trench play.
And according to Lions general manager Brad Holmes, the Lions are in the best position they’ve ever been on both sides of the line.
“This is probably the deepest that we’ve been probably on both sides of...

If you have been watching the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Playoffs over the last few weeks, chances are you have seen some familiar faces sitting in the stands and courtside. On top of the countless other celebrities attending Pistons games, there have been several members of the Detroit Lions, too.
We have seen quarterback Jared Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, and wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams all in attendance, a trend I would expect to continue for as long as the Pistons continue their playoff run. Side note—it really is cool how...

It’s been quite some time since we checked in with Detroit Lions fans regarding their opinion of general manager Brad Holmes. The last time we polled our audience was almost exactly a year ago, following the team’s 2025 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, those poll results were lost to time (and a migration to a new content management system at SB Nation).
But as you can see below, Holmes has been an extremely popular figure among Detroit sports fans for pretty much his entire career.
March 2021 (pre-free agency): 97 percent approval
May 2021 (post-draft): 98 percent
September 2021 (post-cuts): 90 percent...

A few days ago, we discussed the Detroit Lions’ biggest strengths. Many of you agreed with my selection of Detroit’s receiving options—including a deadly one-two duo at wide receiver, a top-five tight end, and a dangerous running back in the passing game. Others rightfully pointed to Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who has statistically been a top-five quarterback for the past four years. Some believe the offensvie line has returned to its level of dominance. You can continue that discussion here.
Now it’s time to look at the other side of the coin. No NFL roster is perfect, and the Lions...

In a lot of ways, the 2026 NFL Draft was one of the least surprising Detroit Lions drafts under general manager Brad Holmes. There weren’t any massive head-scratching picks or big diversions from expectations.
But Holmes always manages to subvert expectations in some way or another. So in our final installment of our 2026 Detroit Lions draft roundtable, our staff makes their selections for the most surprising moment from Detroit’s draft.

According to a recent story from ESPN, the Detroit Lions were all prepared to hired Matt Campbell as their new head coach in 2021. Campbell, the Iowa State head coach at the time, initially agreed to be the Lions’ new head coach, but eventually pulled out, per the story.
In 2021, Campbell initially agreed to coach the Detroit Lions before changing his mind; the Lions hired Dan Campbell instead,
“Leaving Ames wasn’t something that I was looking to do or wanting to do,” he said.
This is the latest development in a story that had conflicting reports...

It’s one thing to know the Detroit Lions are a gritty team, but it’s a whole other to experience it up close and personal.
Third-year cornerback Terrion Arnold relived his first Lions training camp in 2024 in an interview on “NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov.” He said the major thing that jumped out at him—just how hard and intense the camps are.
“Hard and intensity are two totally different things,” he explained. “Hard is—you can go out and practice and you can make something hard, but to be able to have that level of intensity for two hours, and to...

The NFL developed the compensatory pick system as a way to balance free agency for teams who can’t afford to retain their talented players. In short, the NFL provides extra resources to teams who lose more talent in free agency than they add by giving them extra draft capital in the following year’s draft. The details of this formula are extremely complicated—weighing the length and value of each contract signed in free agency, as well as incorporating the snap counts of players added and lost. But there is one significant loophole that needs to be closed, and the New York...

With DJ Reader agreeing to terms with the New York Giants this week, the Detroit Lions’ have now seen 11 of their own free agents sign elsewhere. You can see the full list of the Lions’ free agency losses and gains here with our 2026 Detroit Lions offseason tracker.
For a team that really values keeping and rewarding their own, it’s been a surprisingly active offseason for Detroit, but much of that was by necessity. The Lions were clearly in savings mode, as only one of their free agency signings—or even *re-signings—*averaged more than $5 million per year (Cade Mays)....
Pride of Detroit
The 2026 Detroit Lions offseason figures to be a busy one. The team is going through a serious transition on the offensive line; they’ve already agreed to trade away a key skill position player, and with a bunch of pending free agents on the defensive side of the ball, the 2026 roster could look significantly different than last year’s.
So to keep track of all the Lions’ offseason moves—including free agent signings, trades, releases, and everything else—we’ve put together a tracker that will follow every transaction. That not only includes players that the Lions add or re-sign, but also where...

The Detroit Lions’ 2025 season was the first time in 15 years that an undrafted rookie didn’t make the team’s initial 53 50-man roster. Even players who appeared to have strong training camps—like safety Ian Kennelly—didn’t make the team or the practice squad. That said, a couple of those players have hung around a year later. Receiver Jackson Meeks, running back Kye Robichaux, tight end Zach Horton, and offensive lineman Mason Miller are all currently on the 90-man roster, hoping to keep those NFL dreams alive.
Joining them is an unconfirmed class of nine new undrafted rookies. In the latest...

Former Detroit Lions nose tackle DJ Reader is has reportedly agreed to terms to joint the New York Giants. Per Ian Rapoport, it’s a two-year, $12.5 million deal for Reader, as the 31-year-old defensive lineman becomes the latest to leave the Lions this offseason via free agency.
Reader had spent the last two years in Detroit, signing a two-year, $22 million deal with the Lions back in 2024. The veteran nose tackle played in 32 of 34 available games for the Lions, logging 51 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 12 quarterback hits over that time. While Reader was an integral part...
